Preservation Virginia has included Chief Powhatan’s birthplace in Henrico County, the sacred site of WaHōnSeNaKah, on its 2026 list of the most endangered places.

The site — located on the north bank of the James River downstream from present Richmond — was also home to a plantation and enslaved community and it is recognized as the site of Richmond’s surrender at the end of the Civil War.
