The City of Reno has added seven new historical spots and new maps that fold up into the size of a business card, as part of its Historical Marker Program.

Melissa Hafey, arts & culture management assistant, said a marker can take several years to approve and it’s important to place markers in areas that don’t have traces of the past.

People can get physical maps at Reno City Hall or the Mckinley Arts and Culture Center.

Art Signals is a public art project from the City of Reno to give emerging artists a public art experience.

Raquel Monserrat, the special event supervisor for Sparks, said they started a similar program a couple years ago after seeing Reno’s success. “Our mayor would like to see all of them painted in the City of Sparks. I think there’s about 142 and we have 30 painted already,” Monserrat said.

Local artists receive $1,000 each for painting signal boxes in both the Reno and Sparks programs.

New interstate licensing agreements will enable health care providers from member states to begin caring for patients sooner when they move to Nevada.

Anahit Baghshetsyan, a research assistant at the Nevada Policy Research Institute, explained how this is a win for medical professionals, especially in military communities, who are already licensed in a member state and can easily move to Nevada without time-consuming and expensive licensing requirements.

Those interested in receiving a service dog can apply online at canine.org.

In recent weeks, destructive and deadly flash floods have hit parts of the country, including the Mountain West. A New York Times analysis found the National Weather Service has vacant senior leadership positions in many flash flood “hot spots” – including chief meteorologist, hydrologist, operations officer and coordinating officer.

The National Weather Service is in the process of hiring about 125 employees across the U.S. But many offices will still likely remain under stress, said Alan Gerard, a former meteorologist for the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Severe Storms Lab.
