Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna (22 April 1888 โ 30 May 1958) was a Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman. He is regarded as the forerunner of the post-independence leadership of Fiji. He did more than anybody to lay the groundwork for self-government by fostering the development of modern institutions in Fiji, and although he died a dozen years before independence from the United Kingdom was achieved in 1970, his vision set the course that Fiji was to follow in the years to come.Ratu Sukuna passed away in 1958, but his influence endures. Today, he remains a symbol of leadership, resilience, and national pride in Fiji. His life story inspires generations to stand firm for their rights, embrace education, and cherish their cultural heritage.
Ratu Sukunaโs life embodies the spirit of a leader who balanced tradition with progress, ensuring that Fijiโs indigenous people could navigate the challenges of colonial rule while holding onto their identity. His legacy continues to inspire Fijiโs journey toward independence and nationhood.Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna
Ratu Sukuna's studies were interrupted by World War I. He wanted to join the British Army but was not allowed because the British didn't want to use Fijian soldiers. Determined to prove himself and his people, Sukuna joined the French Foreign Legion instead. He fought bravely but got wounded at the end of 1915 and had to return to Fiji.
Happy Ratu Sukuna Day to all fellow Fijians through out the globe ๐
