West St. Paul Reader

West St. Paul Reader Neighborhood news supported by neighbors. Our goal is to inform, engage, and connect the people of West St. Paul, Minnesota. It’s your community. Paul.

We’re a first-ring suburb of 20,000 people in a metro area of more than 3 million. The local news media doesn’t pay a lot of attention to us—understandably—so it’s hard to know what’s going on. That can make people feel disconnected and aloof. But when you know what’s going on, you feel a sense of belonging in your community. That warm feeling? That’s local pride. The challenge, of course, is that

people are busy. Who has time to attend city council meetings and parse what’s really happening? Even if you know what’s happening, do you know why? Sometimes understanding the dynamics at play is even harder. We try to make it simple. We help busy people know what’s going on in West St.

The news right now is a flood for our one-person, part-time operation, but we're doing our best to keep WSP informed. We update our ongoing ICE in WSP story multiple times a day, but it's a challenge to do more detailed reporting.

However, we've seen some new members and one-time donations this week, so we're trying to put those funds to work immediately. We already assigned one contributor to do some first-hand reporting, and hoping to do some more.

Visit our support page to learn more about membership or one-time donations: https://weststpaulreader.com/support/

Thank you.

We also talk about the challenge of this flood of news on our one-person, half-time operation, and how we're focused on rolling updates. Plus, the bots and trolls overwhelming ICE posts.

Shortly after noon, a few hundred students walked out at Heritage E-STEM Middle School to protest ICE. While they stayed on school grounds, many carried signs and there were several chants of “No more ICE!” It lasted about 20 minutes before they headed back inside. A small group of parents watched and cheered from the sidewalk. An email from the district to families emphasized that the walkout was student led and not school sponsored. While the district supports students’ first amendment rights, they also detailed consequences for walking out of school, including unexcused absences and potentially forfeiting the right to participate in sports and activities that day.
