Two local healthcare workers, with over 50 years of combined service in their respective fields recently returned from a mission trip to Guatemala, where they helped save lives.

Ken Beach, a semi-retired certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and Wanda Stepan, a surgical technician at Emplify Health by Gundersen in West Union, recently completed a weeklong trip to Central America, where they assisted with dozens of surgeries through an organization called Guatemala Health Talents International (HTI).

Additional information on their experience can be read in the Wednesday, Aug. 13, Union. www.fayettecountynewspapers.com

This is the second year Hawkeye volunteers have provided free lunch every Thursday noon for Hawkeye’s young people. The program has served an average of 25-30 youth each week.

The volunteers communicate using social media and phone calls to coordinate the food preparation – what’s needed, who is bringing what, and other logistics.

Classic tractor and implement collectors not only relish the opportunity to restore tractors they may have driven on their family farm as youth, but they also enjoy saving a piece of agricultural history.

Fayette classic tractor owners Chuck Sprague, Tim O’Brien, and Dave Collins are among those who enjoy their old iron toys and there’s no doubt they are doing their part in salvaging a part of northeast Iowa’s agricultural past.

West Union’s innovative Green Streetscapes project was on display to a group of visitors from the east coast recently as a team from Vermont Community Thermal Networks (VCTN), which includes representatives from Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, toured several downtown buildings.

Following the meeting, in a letter to The Union editor, the representatives stated: "We traveled from distant places because we understood that West Union is an important destination for learning about how a community can provide lower cost heating and cooling while also improving its streetscape infrastructure and revitalizing its downtown.

"We applaud your work loudly and will continue sharing your story across the country. Bravo, West Union!"

West Union’s Green Streetscapes project was a $10.2 million project which broke ground in 2010 and was completed in 2012 and included replacement of existing streets with porous paving, bioswales, a civic place, sidewalks, street lighting, and a district geothermal system.

Additional information on the visit, can be read in today's Union.
