2. Save beyond the down payment. Closing costs, moving expenses, and those first-month surprises add up fast. Aim to have 3–5% of the home price set aside on top of your down payment so you're not caught off guard.

3. Get pre-approved, not just pre-qualified. Pre-approval shows sellers you're serious and gives you a realistic budget to shop with confidence. It's one of the smallest steps with one of the biggest payoffs.
