Breaking: Where is the Next Cannabis Tourism Hot Spot?

According to National Geographic, South Africa could be one of the destinations that replace Amsterdam as the cannabis capital of the world. South Africa, for one, decriminalized cannabis use in private spaces in 2018.

As new laws threaten to close down Amsterdam as the world’s chief cannabis tourism desination, “South Africa’s cannabis tourism is poised to be a major niche tourism segment for the country,” Tafadzwa Matiza, tourism lecturer at the country’s North-West University has told National Geographic magazine.

He says the sale of h**p-based fabrics, clothing, and food products may create further economic opportunities. South Africa also has an increasing number of ma*****na tours and “bud and breakfast” venues, which offer both accommodation and legal cannabis.

Breaking: Ugandans Allowed to Cultivate Cannabis for Medicinal Purposes

Uganda's parliament has enacted the landmark Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control Bill 2023, signaling a pivotal change in the nation's approach to controlled substances.

The newly passed legislation authorizes the licensed cultivation and medical usage of ma*****na, while concurrently instituting severe penalties for substance abuse-related infractions. This groundbreaking move comes after the Constitutional court annulled the 2016 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Control Act in May, spurred by a successful legal challenge from the Wakiso Miraa Growers and Dealers Association.

Breaking: South Africans Permitted to possess, use and cultivate cannabis by an adult, for personal consumption, in private.

The South African Police Service has confirmed that the private cultivation and use of cannabis will not warrant an arrest, despite a Constitutional Court (ConCourt) ruling in 2018.

Breaking: Moroccan Cannabis Industry Versus Israel compete for Europe

Israel's Health Ministry announcement in August to liberalize its laws on the use of medical cannabis, will significantly widen the drug use in a health-care setting, as well as boost exports of the product to foreign markets and with that the rivarly with Morocco.

With its longer history in medical cannabis, Israeli firms are likely to make a quicker and more seamless entry into European markets than Morocco. Several Israeli firms involved with the industry have strengthened on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since the Health Ministry’s announcement in early August.

Breaking: A fascinating Study in Rural Nigeria that Highlights the Economics of Cannabis

Arriving at the tranquil village health facility in southwestern Nigeria, we were met by a small gathering of men—young and old—with thinly veiled excitement.

These rural farmers were visibly intrigued by our research interest in their experiences as proud growers of ewé ọlà (leaf of wealth), as they colloquially describe cannabis in the Yorùbá language. They had consented to meeting at the health facility because of its obscure location.

BREAKING: African Cannabis University Launches in Ghana

The institution aims to provide education, research, and training in various aspects of the cannabis plant. Speaking to the media at the launch, H.E Davisha Johnson, the Co-founder and President of the African Cannabis University explained how the school will function. “In January 2024 we will start actual classes online and when we finish our building, we will take in graduate students for Bachelor’s degree certificates and we will go up to do PhD in future. If you are a farmer then you will take the introductory course but if you are an investor, you will take the 12-week course. She highlighted that the institution would be of great benefit to the nation as it would ensure cannabis does not go to waste and farmers are taught how they can produce products legally globally.

Breaking: Zimbabwe is Open For Cannabis Business!

To start bridging the gap in cannabis knowledge and information as medicine, New Avakash International has provided US$50,000 for 100 Zimbabwean health professionals to study an online programme on the cannabis sciences. This will hopefully accelerate the understanding of the plant's health effects and possible therapies for treating conditions. This scholarship was acknowledged and supported by the govt through the Ministry of Health and Child Care. Stanley Muengwa said the issuance of scholarships would help promote the understanding of medical cannabis.

Breaking: A Perspective from Morocco's Budding Cannabis Industry.

After generations as outlaws, small farmers across the Rif Mountains are being asked to team up with multinationals to take the North African kingdom’s lucrative crop mainstream.

After criminalizing cannabis farming for six decades, in May 2021 the Moroccan Parliament reversed course, passing a law that lawmakers hoped would open a new era when farmers and the state would collaborate to capitalize on the country’s cannabis potential, worth an estimated $15 billion, for pharmaceutical purposes. The vision — to transform the country’s illicit trade into a sleek, streamlined, medicalized, multinational operation — is the first of its kind in North Africa, where cannabis has for decades been ferried illegally across borders on mules, in small trucks or on Zodiac boats.

Breaking: History of South African Durban Poison

An excellent piece published by HIGH TIMES.

South Africa has a long tradition of cannabis cultivation and southern Africa is home to numerous landrace cultivars that many may never have heard of outside the region. For many years, Durban Poison was one of them, but thanks to the birth of Amsterdam’s coffee shops and the work of American cannabis enthusiasts, the whole world now can enjoy this unique, THCv-rich landrace cultivar.

The modern history of Durban Poison began in the late 1970s, when the legendary cannabis breeder and grower, Ed Rosenthal , took a trip to Amsterdam. Despite many websites claiming Rosenthal went to South Africa to get the genetics, he told High Times, “I did not travel to South Africa, that is totally not true, I don’t know who created that urban legend.”

Breaking: Urge to Criminalise Cannabis in Uganda

The Director of Butabika National Referral Referral Hospital, Dr. Juliet Nakku has implored Members of Parliament to ignore the economic pressures, and ban the production and sale of cannabis and khat.

Nakku said that their consumption contributes greatly to mental health cases and poses social and economic pressures to government and families.

She rejected the argument by khat and cannabis growers in Uganda, who claim that the production and sale of the drugs have a significant economic impact, and asked MPs to study the economies of African countries where such drugs are legalised.
“Look at their economies and see whether they are growing; we had better protect our people before we go into something we do not know” said Aceng.

BREAKING: Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, has disclosed that the amendment to the Narcotics Control Commission Act (Act 1019) passed by Parliament in 2020 has not legalised the smoking of cannabis.

He said the recent amendment was meant to re-establish the Interior Minister’s discretionary powers to give licences for cultivation of a certain strain of cannabis for industrial and medical purposes, after the legal challenge of Section 43 of the law. He explained that the intent of these licences, as clearly expressed by sub-section 2 of Section 43, is not extended to the cultivation of cannabis intended for recreational usage.
