On January 6, 2026, a Calgary judge sentenced three co-owners of the restaurant Marina Dosa and Tandoori Grill to jail for defrauding their temporary foreign workers.
The owners — Manikandan Kasinathan, Chandramohan Marjak, and Mary Roche — each received a 90-day jail term (to be served intermittently on weekends), starting January 30, 2026, plus 18 months of probation. They must also repay $44,000 in total restitution to their three victims.
The victims, all Indian nationals hired as cooks between 2017 and 2020 under Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program, were forced to pay bogus “government fees” (falsely tied to Labour Market Impact Assessments, which employers are required to cover). The owners threatened deportation if the workers didn’t comply, exploiting their vulnerable tied-work-permit status.
The trio was convicted of fraud over $5,000 in 2025, with the judge citing aggravating factors like threats and abuse of power.
