Let me tell you a story.

Oka ammaayi thana parents tho restaurant ki vellindhi. She was wearing a white dress (let's not think about its type).

Food order chesaaka, amma kuthurni thidthondhi -
"Evaraina restaurant ki white dress veskosthaara, food marakalu padithe?"

Girl -
"Ivaala white dress veskovaali anipinchindhamma, jagrathaga thinta don't worry"

Mom -
"Neek ardhamkaadhe, maatallo padi thintu food padachu, adhedho white dress kaakunda vere colour veyyachugaa"

Idhanthaa vintunna naanna, ilaa antaaru....

"Marakalu padthaay ani nachina colour dress vesukovadam maanesthaama"

Mom -
"Nen thana manchike chepthunna, marakalu padithe thanake ga discomfort, bayatiki velladaaniki kuda ibbandhi avthundiga"

Dad -
"Ayithe thanu alaa feel avvakunda undela manam prayatninchaali, evarem anukunte manakenti ani"

Mom -
"Sare, vere vaalla gurinchi voddhu, thanu feel avthundhiga dress paadayyindhani. Thinedhaaka thanu conscious ga undaali, ekkada maraka paduthundo ani ..

ilaa bhayam bhayam ga thinebadhulu dress ye vere colour vesthe baagundedhi kadha”

Now, Dad takes a kerchief from his pocket and lays it down on daughter's lap.
Then, he turns to his wife and says -
"Manam marakalni handle cheyyaali, mana kuthurni kaadhu."

The mother realises.
Now, she says to the daughter -
"Happy ga peaceful ga thinu thalli..."
She pauses and says,
"Okavela marakalu padinaa parledu, neekante maaku marakalu ekkuva kaadhu."

**This story is not just about White Dress and Food stains**

P.S. -
"White dress" represents Women and their choices (like dressing),
"Food stains" represent the Bad things happening to them, deemed as they are happening "because of wearing a White Dress" (like Harrasment, Sexual Assault etc.)

This is not a perfect analogy. But, I tried.

> Her parents filed a dowry case against her husband
> He and his family were booked in a dowry case
> He went to Nagpur with his family; there, he took his own life in a hotel

Two lives were lost. Who is responsible for this?

If her husband really was a bad person, would he have taken his own life? Did fake cases force him?

And why did she take her life? She could have divorced him and married another man.

1. Who is responsible?
It is rarely just one person. It is a systemic failure:
• The "Arranged" System without Transparency: If the husband was indeed impotent or had medical issues, this should have been disclosed before the marriage. The pressure to marry often forces people to hide medical realities, leading to a feeling of betrayal later.
• The Stigma of Divorce: You asked why she didn't just divorce him. In many conservative Indian families, a daughter returning home within days of marriage is seen as a massive "loss of honor." The pressure to make the marriage work—or the shame of a failed marriage—can make a woman feel like death is the only escape from the humiliation.
• The Legal System (Section 498A): The filing of a dowry harassment case immediately after a su***de is a standard reaction by grieving parents, but it creates a "guilty until proven innocent" scenario.
2. If the husband was a "bad person," would he have taken his life?
Su***de is rarely about being "good" or "bad"; it is about hopelessness.
• Fear of the Law: In India, Section 498A (Cruelty/Dowry) is non-bailable and leads to immediate arrest. For a middle-class man, the threat of jail, the loss of a job, and the public humiliation of being branded a "dowry killer" is terrifying.
• Guilt vs. Panic: He likely fled to Nagpur not because he was a criminal mastermind, but because he was in a panic. Taking his life suggests he saw no way to clear his name. He might have felt that his life was over regardless of the truth—society would always blame him for her death.
3. Why did she take her life instead of divorcing?
This points to the mental health crisis in India.
• Emotional Shock: Discovering a partner's impotence or feeling deceived about something so fundamental can cause acute emotional shock.
• Lack of Support: If she felt she couldn't tell her parents the intimate details, or if she feared they would tell her to "adjust," she may have felt completely isolated.
• The "Damaged Goods" Narrative: Society often treats divorced women harshy. She may have feared she would never be married again or would be a burden on her parents (who just spent 40 lakhs).
Summary
This is a tragedy of reaction.
1. Action: A medical/intimacy issue was hidden or undiscovered.
2. Reaction 1 (Her): She felt trapped/betrayed and, fearing the shame of a failed marriage, ended her life.
3. Reaction 2 (Parents): Overcome with grief, they utilized the strongest legal weapon available (Dowry law) to punish the husband.
4. Reaction 3 (Him): Facing social ruin and imprisonment, he felt cornered and ended his life.
Both were victims of a society that values "image" over honest communication, and a legal system that often turns tragic family disputes into criminal warfare.

Anjel Chakma
