Aural Transit: Soundscapes of Urban Movement is a digital humanities project that records and maps soundscapes of cities with a large focus on experiences within public transit. In Summer 2017 and inspired by The Acoustic City, Matthew Gandy, Benny Nilsen (eds.), Aural Transit decided to produce their own recordings of Toronto’s urban life. Currently Aural Transit uses a basic Google Map with each

city's soundscapes as a separate layer (as of August 2017, Toronto, Riga, and Berlin have been recorded). Once we have a larger collection, Aural Transit plans to switch to a more stable and comprehensive mapping platform with which we can add additional filters (especially the time of day). We look forward to building a more comprehensive archive of urban soundscapes over the next year. Don’t hesitate to contact us with comments and suggestions as to where we should record.

“For many New Yorkers, their subway line is a second home. They see their neighbors on the same route; they know which car will be closest to their exit; and they have favorite spots for the ride. Mr. Wagner, who has been taking photographs in the subway since 2013 and whose book, 'Here for the Ride,' will be published this week, likes to stand in front of the doors…Mr. Wagner said. ‘Even though they might not share the same space as far as where they live or where they’re going, for this brief moment, they’re all in it together.’”

“The New York City subway is this great equalizer,” said the photographer Andre Wagner, who spent four years taking photographs on its platforms and in its cars. “For this brief moment in time, we’re all in it together.”

Walter Ruttmann’s “Weekend” (1930) is a fascinating artifact of Wiemar culture and Berlin’s soundscape. Ruttmann drove around his neighbourhood of Mariendorf and recorded various soundscapes in order to produce “imageless film” that depicts a typical Berliner weekend.
