July 28, 2025 - Closure of Lake Chauncy Due to Cyanobacteria Effective Immediately - Until Further Notice
Notice from Jennifer Sullivan, Public Health Director Town of Westborough:
The Public Health Department has temporarily closed Lake Chauncy to the public due to the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in the water. This closure is effective immediately and applies to all waterrelated activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, and any other form of direct contact with the water.
Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that pose serious health risks to both humans and animals. Exposure may occur through skin contact, accidental ingestion, or inhalation, and can result in symptoms such as skin and eye irritation, gastrointestinal illness, respiratory distress, and, in some cases, more severe or life-threatening effects. Animals are also highly susceptible to these toxins. Pets and wildlife that drink from or swim in contaminated water may become seriously ill or die. It is extremely important to keep all pets away from the lake and shoreline during this time.
The Town is monitoring the situation closely and will reopen Lake Chauncy once it has been determined that water quality conditions are safe for public and animal use.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid all contact with the water until further notice. For additional information, please contact the Westborough Board of Health at (508) 366-3045.
We thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to protect the health and safety of the community.
Jennifer Sullivan
Public Health Director
