Garage Mahal Recording Studio Exciting records are made under exciting circumstances. I serve as Recording Engineer and Music Producer.

Garage Mahal Recording is a full service audio and music recording studio in the Portland-Westbrook Maine area. We pride ourselves in helping our clients realize their artistic vision in a flexible and familiar recording environment, using both modern technology & old school recording techniques. http://www.garagemahalrecording.com

Our studio was designed to provide a flexible & familiar environm

ent, with a 330 sq ft main tracking room large enough to be comfortable while maintaining intimacy. Two booths accommodate anything from a guitar amp or solo vocalist to a small drum kit or horn section. All rooms are constructed with Owens-Corning sound rated materials, floating floors for acoustic isolation, and are wired together, providing maximum flexibility for whatever setup the client wants. Garage Mahal Recording embraces both new technology and old school recording techniques. A great recording starts with a great performance, and our Hearback cueing system provides the client with complete hands-on control over their own personal headphone mix. A solid and growing collection of microphones capture the sounds. Recording digitally on a computer (or DAW) keeps costs low and provides a flexibility unheard of in the analog days.

Sad news: a Garage Mahal alumni, Ken McCullick, has passed. Ken played guitar for the band Black Orange and was the super laid back member, just a really nice guy. He and I would chat on FB messenger, and he told me that he was gravely ill, so I just listened and tried to keep the conversation light. He will be missed.

50 years ago today saw the release of the greatest rock and roll album AND the greatest live album (that isn’t completely live) of all time. My life would be extremely different had this album never happened.

Kris and Courtney, vocalists for Cold Creeps, were back at Garage Mahal Recording Studio twice this week to lay down tracks for the EP. Lead vocals on Tuesday, backing vocals on Thursday. It’s always a good time with them.

The new tracks by The Bank Mules are now completed: recorded and mixed by yours truly at Garage Mahal Recording Studio and mastered by Pat Keane at Keane Mastering. Really great old timey music and an extremely enjoyable project. You can listen and purchase on Bandcamp:

Late last Thursday night I received an email from an old friend. Rene Braun is a photographer extraordinaire (His shots of By Blood Alone are excellent), and he needed a studio on short notice. He came in to work on some of his songs and we tracked vocals and 6-string ukulele. He sings well and songs were heartwarming and charming. The 6 string uke sounded really good as well.

A few weeks ago I did something I thought I would never do again: mix Front of House. It had been literally decades since my live sound days, but when Ronnie Lee of Enigmatheory asked me to mix an upcoming show, I couldn’t say no. It was the first time I had mixed live with an all digital system, the show went well and I can now see the pros and cons of live mixing with both digital and analog.

At the last minute, Mark Horn came in to lay down some drums on The Bank Mules EP using a “suitcase” drum set. I decided to use some unlikely mics and even placed a mic down the stairs to get some natural, boomy reverb. Major studio fun!

Christian Crumlish gave me some nice props for my design work on the new Layers of Meta CD. It was a very enjoyable project and I think amongst my best work. Unboxing video below.

COSMIC were at Garage Mahal Recording Studio this past weekend for final overdubs on the new Cosmic album: cello, lead guitar, cymbals and vocal doubles. I can now start mixing. (Special thanks to session cellist Ellie Osborn for the tracks and cosmic bassist Bernie Tajonera for being awesome!)

Noted jazz pianist Bess Jacques dropped by the studio today to deliver a copy of her new CD with The Strays, “Anthems for Lily Briscoe.” I had the pleasure of designing the cover. Special thanks to Lauryn Hottinger for the excellent photography!
