I hour north of NYC, Hudson River Valley views, courtesy of a capped landfill (notice there aren’t any trees on the hill).

My son took these pictures on a bike ride around Croton Point Park Campground on the largest peninsula on the river. There was a lovely beach, paved trails and a classic rec hall that I hope still gets use.

County campgrounds are often hidden gems worth seeking out. A great source to find them is AllStays.

A few months ago, I mailed $75 cash to a sweet old woman I spoke with on the phone at Shore Hills Campground.
I appreciated being able to share a bit about our trip. I think it helped her find the perfect spot for us: “it’s small but it’s the best view in the campground,” she said in a thick Mainer accent.
Yes, please! 🙏
There was a $10 deposit (also cash) for the gate key card.
When I returned it, I noticed a basket of hand knit mittens in the camp store. The price? $10.

This campground, and campgrounds like these, are precious. We saw seals, people clamming, an adorable old couple holding hands at the water’s edge and young families coming to our special spot to check out the view.
Thanks for the hospitality , we will return.

Behind the scenes at the in Boothbay, ME, held at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.
Thousands of people braved the rain and brought their treasures to be appraised, including both of our next door neighbors back at the campsite! Check out the cute pic of an antique lamp in a raincoat 😍
Hats off to Rich and the other specialists who appraised for 12+ hours straight.
After getting a VIP tour that included a visit to a bounteous snack table/teenagers dream, Marco and I explored the grounds then headed back to camp, where we enjoyed a dinner of ravioli in the van.
We let Rich stay in town in the hotel.

From a simple set-up in the woods to an ornate mansion, our day in the Hudson River Valley didn’t disappoint.
Just a 30 minute drive from our campsite at Beaver Pond campground is Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival summer home for a few wealthy NY families.
Its owners included a man who became wealthy from a shock absorber he invented for the passenger rail car.

This van never ceases to amaze me! I did a big cleaning in the driveway today and when I opened the fridge to wipe it down, I spotted … wait for it … a lone ice cube (swipe for pic). Turns out we forgot to switch the fridge off and it’s been running since our last campout 2 weeks ago. We added no water to our smallest-ever ice cube maker, and yet. It just wants to make ice! And apparently did that from condensation.

Loading up for an exciting trip tomorrow, nothing but blue skies and I got that pre-trip feeling (can you see it?)…. This time of year we head north, and that means going through NYC. 🤞🤞It can get pretty hot when we’re stopped in traffic and the “Volkswagen air conditioning” shuts down, lol. But once we make it through, beautiful New England and a very special campground on Martha’s Vineyard awaits.
