When the judge says “we need more variety,” what does that actually mean?

Dalton breaks it down through the triad:

Form.
Body.
Equipment.

If your show leans too hard on one of those for too long, the audience can start to check out — even if the work is technically strong. Variety is not always about adding harder choreography. Sometimes it is about changing the flavor.

Can the form shift?
Can the body layer change?
Can the equipment phrase create a different texture?
Can the transition feel different than the one before it?

That is where design analysis becomes practical.

This clip is from the full Pro Tip Besties Design Analysis episode from On A Water Break, in collaboration with Guard Closet and the Design Closet.

Featuring Nicole Younger, Dalton Stout, Preston Copas, Annie Stegall, and Jordan Fontana.

Marching band staff: band camp is closer than you think.

Whitney Stone gives the summer prep checklist every color guard and marching band staff should already be working through: train the performers, teach the technique, size the cast, order the costumes, prep the flag designs, get music in students’ hands, and make sure the staff understands the full show before band camp hits.

This is the part of the season where “we still have time” turns into “why is everything due yesterday?”

Judges are not judging your art.

Nicole Younger breaks down what judges are actually evaluating: how your music, color palette, props, performers, and design choices work together to create effect.

That does not mean the art is bad.
It means the construction has to be clear.

Designers, instructors, and performers — this one is for you.

Your All-Access Pass to the Marching Arts.

Ashlee thought she was just talking about kids learning everything from TikTok… and somehow ended up in a drumline vocabulary lesson with Woody.

Because apparently “cheddar to jet jet right” means something to somebody.

From TikTok flag features to drum speak to the first thing everyone wants to learn — the paradiddle — this clip is pure marching arts translation chaos.

Your All-Access Pass to the Marching Arts.

Elementary marching band with color guard? Ricardo is all in.

In this S4EP18 clip, Ricardo Robinson-Shinall reacts to Nuner Elementary School and Fine Arts Academy starting a marching band with color guard in South Bend, Indiana — and makes the case for getting students into music, movement, performance, and the marching arts early.

Because sometimes the future soloist, drum major, designer, educator, or lifelong arts kid just needs someone to hand them an instrument, a flag, and a reason to believe they belong.

Tony Hall said what a lot of people are thinking.

Yes, drum corps costs money. But buses, fuel, food, housing, uniforms, staff, and tour operations all cost money too.

If you love the activity, support it. Buy merch. Donate. Show up.

What does open source actually mean—and why does it matter in the marching arts?

Open March is rethinking how drill writing tools can work: more accessible, more collaborative, and shaped by the people who actually use them.

In this clip, Alex explains why community-driven tools could open doors for designers, educators, and programs everywhere.

Big conversation. Bigger possibilities.
