We will talk about James Whitcomb Riley and the hauntings in this house during our Haunted Indianapolis - Chatham Arch Lockerbie Ghost Walk on Saturday!
On this day in 1916, Riley passed away in his sleep. That morning, he had his second stroke but appeared to be recovering throughout the day. However, at nearly 11 pm that night, his nurse noticed that he was restless, and he passed away shortly after. The next morning, the front page of the Indianapolis Star told the tale of his death. Featured in the paper are several excerpts of poems that Riley wrote surrounding the topic of death. Each of these poems talks about the peacefulness of death and the joy of enjoying life and memories with each other. Pictured here is the front page of the newspaper from July 23rd, 1916, the day after Riley passed.
