Today we remember June 19, 1865, Juneteenth, when Federal Troops arriving in Galveston, TX informed the local population that formerly enslaved people were indeed free. It was another step into the direction to make this truly the Land of the Free. The 28th U.S. Colored Troops, which included local soldier James Dempsy were enroute to Galveston but on that date probably still off the coast of Mississippi. He is buried in the Anti-Slavery Friends Cemetery and we will visit him during our walking tour tonight.
