Your donations at work: In the recent third round of grants from our Emergency Relief Fund, the Foundation provided a $15,000 grant to Foster Angels of South Texas. These funds will directly benefit over 60 children in foster care between the ages of 0-21 and provide them with laptops, recreational items, grocery assistance, new beds with bedding, clothing or hygienic items, and rental assistance.

Foster Angels of South Texas stated, “At Foster Angels of South Texas we offer help to children in foster care when they are experiencing their greatest moment of need. It is important to understand that they have suffered various forms of abuse and neglect at the hands of the people they should trust the most. We believe it's that one moment of caring, given at just the right time, that could translate into a lifetime of change."

The Young Hearts Volunteerism program invites you to join volunteers of all ages for the #MakeASeniorSmile Virtual Volunteer Hour this Sunday, May 3rd from 3pm to 4pm PST

Since residents in senior living homes are not allowed visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, join us to participate in a small act of kindness to let our fellow community members and senior citizens know they are not alone and to make them smile! You can also take this time to create warmhearted cards for your favorite Grandmother, just in time for Mother's Day!

We are excited to host our first Virtual Volunteerism Day in 2020! Our Open Hearts and Young Hearts families will gather virtually on Zoom to create inspirational cards or notes to seniors who are isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then mail your cards to our identified senior living facilities.

A simple act of creating a card, drawing a picture, or a nice sentiment, can go a long way to make our elders feel special.

RSVP by Friday, May 1st to join the #MakeASeniorSmile Virtual Volunteer Hour at [email protected] When you RSVP, we will follow up with the Zoom meeting link and other details.

The Foundation's Emergency Relief Fund grants benefit charities on the front lines of the pandemic like Jenesse Center, Inc..

The Foundation provided a $10,000 matching grant to support the ongoing and increasing number of families seeking shelter, basic needs, and other mental health services due to the surge of domestic violence incidents surrounding the COVID-19 virus.

Karen Earl, CEO of Jenesse Center said, "We are so grateful for the Open Hearts Foundation grant and matching campaign because it better positions Jenesse staff to help more people during this difficult time where the "Safer at Home" mandate is actually dangerous for people who are victims of domestic violence. We thank our 40th Anniversary co-chair, Dr. Felicia D. Henderson, who is heading up the Open Hearts Foundation matching campaign to help Jenesse raise funds to help domestic violence victims survive this pandemic safely and heal in a safe and caring space."

The Foundation's Emergency Relief Fund grants benefit charities on the front lines of the pandemic like Mending Kids.

The Foundation provided a $10,000 challenge grant to support their efforts that provide medical supplies to clinics, doctors, and nurses on the front lines of this pandemic taking care of adults and children in the underserved populations of the Los Angeles area.

“All of a sudden our surgical missions were grounded,” said Mending Kids’ Executive Director, Isabelle Fox. “Our doctors still wanted to travel, but the risk to them was that they’d be quarantined when they got back home, and their practices would take serious hits.” As a result, stockpiled medical equipment intended for foreign service was sitting unused while stories about supply shortages at U.S. clinics and hospitals abounded. Mending Kids had hundreds of masks, along with gowns, face shields and oxygen supply equipment. “My first instinct was — how can we have the most impact with what we have, here at home?” said Fox.

The Foundation's Emergency Relief Fund grants benefit charities on the front lines of the pandemic like the Association to Benefit Children (ABC) in New York.

Founder and Executive Director, Gretchen Buchenholz said of the grant, “3000 miles used to seem so far away. When I talked to Open Hearts Foundation this week, their warmth and generosity brought me close enough to feel their beating, compassionate hearts. Association to Benefit Children will use this grant to continue responding to the urgent needs of New York City’s most vulnerable children during this crisis.”

Since its founding in 1986, ABC has been a relentless champion for children, addressing needs wherever they arise. Vulnerable children and families in New York face a critical and urgent need right now, since COVID-19 pandemic is particularly disruptive for people living below the poverty line. ABC's COVID-19 response efforts are focused on creating a continuity of care, extending our essential services to children while ensuring the safety of all our staff and families. ABC is providing food, education, mental health treatment, and preventive services.
