Maasai Music Project

Maasai Music Project A ground breaking program that combines science, art & culture. Students travel to Kenya, Africa to record music and share culture with the Maasai.

The Maasai Music Project is an environmental and science education and outreach collaboration between members of The Environmental Club (Ohio, U.S.A) and Maasai from Kenya, Africa. We believe that science, art, and education are not separate, isolated disciplines, but are deeply interconnected. And, we believe that kids' have a voice, and they should be heard. We have been recognized by major educ

ational and environmental organizations for our groundbreaking combination of science, art, music, and environmental education and outreach, including the 2009 Sea World Environmental Excellence Award, and we have joined forces with a coalition of the Cincinnati Zoo, Miami University and the African Conservation Center to create an amazing new project. Besides original music, we create scientific and environmentally centered projects that are completed in Africa and in the U.S.

iHeart Radio used to have a Weezer station. Weezer Radio. They ran an amazing contest where they released the stems to a song. These are the basic recorded tracks: drums, bass, guitars, vocals, all separate. The idea was to remix those stems into a new song.

Most people used those stems to make “remixes,” usually in a different style. Well, Weezer is my all time favorite band, and I have always wanted to perform with them. So instead of changing style, I kept the Nerd Rock vibe going. I wrote new words for parts, added new guitar, strings, synth, backup vocals AND sang half of the lead vocals with Rivers doing the duet.

Actually, I did switch it up a bit, adding a whole acapella introduction and all kinds of new bits throughout. The result is something I am very proud of: an epic 4 minute song with huge guitars, soaring choruses and an over-the-top lead section.

Oh, it was a contest by the way, judged by the Weezer boys to get into the finals, then by fans for the winner.

And I won first place. I did. And they played “Neccos On My Brain” for quite a while on Weezer Radio, many times a day. That made me happy. Since then, NOBODY has heard it. It was tucked away in a hard drive. Until now.

So, here we go. I proudly present “Neccos On My Brain,” my reworking of Weezer’s “My Brain Is Working Overtime” featuring Me, Rivers, Pat and… not sure who is on bass. Might be Matt, might be Mikey.

THANK YOU WEEZER AND THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO LISTENS

Oh, Rivers. If you see this, PLEASE give me a call!
