Most of you are already aware that CCPS has a bit of a budget crisis for the coming school year. You are also likely aware that the BOE is going to request more funding from the County Commissioners, and that they are asking state to relax some of the funding requirements so that they can disperse funds a little more freely.
What you may not be aware of are the details, and why they are important.
The BOE voted during the most recent meeting, to request a total of $57 Million dollars from the Commissioners. $13 Million of this would be considered "unrestricted" funds, that would be used for things like saving Outdoor School (Hooray!!!!) and other programs. This also would have an effect on negotiations and our bus contracts. However, in order to have $13 Million in the "unrestricted" funds pot, we need more money in the funds required by Blueprint, hence the other $44 Million.
The way funding in Blueprint works, you need a % of funding to be used on the requirements in Blueprint, before you can allocate funding to your "unrestricted" budget.
This $44 Million, would go a long way to helping CCPS hire and acquire more staff and resources to meet the Blueprint requirements, to elevate the Tier 4 and Tier 5 schools, to bring them up to par with the other schools in CCPS. These funds would make it so that fewer positions would have to be eliminated, and fewer staff would be required to move to different schools. This would also make it less likely that we would hit that 40 students per class number that has been going around.
What our friends in Moms for Liberty, don't seem to understand, is the basic math of this situation. Well, that and the entire concept. Mr. Whisler proved, during the BOE meeting and on his social media, that he had no clue what he was talking about, and now we see that his bestie Ms. Hart, and even his wife are running with a similar narrative.
In short, CCPS needs the Commissioners to increase the CCPS Budget by $57 Million. Anything less than this will still have major impacts on our school system, and likely would not be able to save Outdoor School, like so many of you have been posting about.
Edit: Corrected reference to Title 1 and Title 2, and replaced with the correct terms Tier 1 and Tier 2.
Edit to correct referenced Tiers. Tiers 1 and 2 are the higher income, higher performing school tiers.
