Freedom of speech took a hit today because someone who spoke out and made a difference in his world was killed for it. The very first tenet of the “Braver Angels Way” is “We state our views freely and fully, without fear.” Charlie embodied this sentiment. And it cost him his life.

He was somebody who was very passionate, vocal, and argumentative. But he sought to have the argument with real people in real time, face to face. We’re missing this in today’s life. Discourse hardly happens anymore. And he ran to it and encouraged others to engage, even those he disagreed with.

Today’s act will discourage many from speaking out. I have to trust that 100 Charlie Kirks will rise up and continue to initiate the conversation as bravely as Charlie did.

It was the morning drive of Tuesday, September 18, 2001 as my mom drove me to school. It was light out and clear weather. I asked my mom why all the cars had their lights on. She replied that this day was the one week anniversary of the attacks. People must feel the need to show a sign of solidarity with one another.

We were in it together as Americans then. We can be in it together as Americans again.
