I turned my elderly client’s car key and watched the sedan die even though her niece said it had made two clinic trips that week. I stared at the odometer because the care log’s mileage did not add up. I wrote the number in my notes and saved the roadside receipt.

My sister took me off our mother’s care rota at a congregation meeting and blamed me for missed medication and meals. I stayed silent because she had warned that family conflict could threaten my housing and paperwork.

After a pharmacist showed the medication was unavailable during part of the period blamed on me, I asked everyone to compare the rota and refill dates. My sister left, returned with her phone, and said she had reported me for neglect.
