Harvest Moon rising — Sept. 5, 2025 🌕🍂

PASCACK PRESS OBSERVATORY—Friday night’s waxing gibbous moon, glowing orange as it rose over Bergen County, is the lead-up to this year’s Harvest Moon — the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, which arrives Sept. 7.

The warm hue is an effect of the atmosphere: when the Moon is low on the horizon, its light travels through more air, scattering away blues and greens and leaving reds and oranges.

Even through the color, you can spot the dark lava plains called maria and bright craters such as Copernicus and Tycho.

Our photographer, John Snyder, shot this on a Nikon Z 50 with kit lens and tripod, and no particular expertise. Anyone have a better shot to share? Post away :)
