I'm a charity focused shop in White Hall, Maryland in a renovated papermill c.1910

Ever have one of those shop days where you stare at your markings and wonder what version of yourself made them? 😅
Turns out the dominoes got mixed into the wrong bin, I got completely turned around, and somehow it became a lesson on why dominoes and biscuits are definitely not the same thing.

A good glue-up starts long before the clamps come out.
Using dominoes for strength and alignment, with a mix of tight and float mortises to give us just enough wiggle room when everything comes together.
The goal? Less fighting the panel and more building. 🪚

Sometimes the smartest move is making the project smaller first.
This material was just too heavy to safely wrestle through the machines on its own. A couple of cuts later, everything became easier, safer, and a whole lot more manageable.
Have you ever spent more time moving material than actually building? 😅🪚

Some days the project fights you the entire way. 😅
Nothing lined up, measurements were off, motivation disappeared, and somewhere along the way the solution became coffee and building something just to reset the brain.
Real shop life isn’t always highlight reels.

Everything looked lined up until it absolutely wasn’t. 😅
One second we’re ready to burn the Iron Man piece, the next the laser is engraving thin air and we’re questioning every decision that got us here.
Real shop life: 10% building, 90% troubleshooting.

Old buildings force you to think differently.
The sprinkler specs call for 80,000 gallons on site, so now we’re crawling around the old mill trying to figure out if the original infrastructure can help us solve a modern problem without bankrupting the project.
Somewhere between engineering and spelunking. 😅
Would you try to reuse the old system or start from scratch?

05/29/2026

This is one of those old-building moments where the existing infrastructure might actually save us.
If we ever need to drain 80,000 gallons from the sprinkler system, there are already old paper mill drainage paths that could make it possible without turning the place into an indoor swimming pool.
Old building problems, old building solutions.
Would you trust the original infrastructure, or build a new system from scratch? 👀🪚

Second exotic pour ever… so we’re learning as we go. 😅
Honestly though? This process is way more DIY-friendly than people think. A little planning, a little chaos, and suddenly you’re making marble-looking countertops in the shop.
Now, if you’ll excuse me…I’m going to lunch. 👀🪚

The first pour taught us what not to do. 😅
Too much dark in the back, so we switched up the layering order and adjusted the process on the fly. That’s the fun part of resin work, every pour teaches you something.
No exact recipe. Just ratios, instinct, and controlled chaos. 👀🪚
