On August 30, 2025, the Abenaki Three Sisters Garden, on what was once the Quechee Polo Field, had its first open house. This was in part made possible by the Hartford 250th Commemoration Committee and was the first in a series of events that will occur through July 4, 2027. Earl Hatley, visionary and hands-on “in the dirt” manager of the garden, was pleased to report that over one hundred people attended the event, including Hartford select board members, Quechee Lakes Landowners (QLLA) Board representatives, and social justice and environmental groups.

Throughout American history, students have sought to shape the decisions affecting their future. From the young women who organized for suffrage in the early 1900s to the students who filled the streets during the Civil Rights Movement, their determination has left a lasting mark on democracy. Today, that legacy continues in Vermont through the Vermont State Youth Council (VSYC), which gives students a formal role in shaping state policy and a direct seat at the table with Governor Phil Scott and the Legislature.

Fifty years ago, our great nation was preparing to celebrate its Bicentennial. The air was filled with excitement – news of the Tall Ships touring the East Coast and mooring in Newport for the Fourth of July, parades marching through the streets, fireworks lighting up the summer sky. After years of protest and division over forced busing in Boston and the unpopular war in Vietnam, I remember feeling a renewed sense of patriotism, an awakening of unity after long discord.

In 1995 I went to the ER with a kidney stone. When asked about my family medical history, I was truly at a loss for words. I had no idea about my biological family. My little sister, Kate, and I were adopted by the Schmidts when I was six. Their biology was not my biology. I knew I had to go looking for the Sullivans.

2025 is coming to a close, and now, more than ever before, I feel the pull to go inward and reflect on where we are, where we have come from and where we are heading. “We” means ‘me’ and it also means the collective human ‘we’. Even Scrooge saw the light and drew some important lessons on how to take stock (albeit the hard way!) of his life and begin to let gratitude, joy and generosity guide him.

In a groundbreaking collaboration this June, the White River Natural Resources Conservation District (WR-NRCD) convened conservation planners, NOFA-VT, and leading forest and agricultural experts for an immersive three-day professional development event at Plenitud VT’s new 101-acre educational farm in Newbury. The goal? To transform how farmers using holistic and organic practices navigate and access vital federal funding streams.

The Quechee Club was certainly rockin’ and rollin’ on a Saturday night in July when it hosted the 23rd Annual CHaD Gala, presented by QLLA Charities. More than 120 guests joined in the fun, all to benefit the Ken & Vickie French Child Advocacy and Protection Program (CAPP) at Dartmouth Health Children’s. This year’s theme was “Rock ’n’ Roll for the Kids” and many of the guests had fun interpreting that theme through their choice of dress–with some definite attitude thrown in!

It started with one simple question – can you create delicious and practical meals using only ingredients that can be grown in Vermont? The idea for The Vermont Farm to Table Cookbook was born over two years ago when my sister (and co-author) Nora Rice and I were having a conversation about so-called ‘superfoods.’

On March 6th, Lisa Steinberg began her presentation by saying that there are three essentials for great plants: light, soil, and water. She said, “Plants need light to photosynthesize. All plants need a bright spot to actually thrive. West and southern exposures are best but if you can’t get that, think about grow lights; they come in all shapes and sizes.”

Quechee’s venerable F. H. Clothing Company owner, Joan Ecker, designed and produced her first “Fat Hats” 46 years ago on a human-powered treadle machine, selling them out of a wooden barrel at craft fair shows all over the Northeast. On one occasion, while selling in front of Lincoln Center, a New York Times reporter asked what else she made. Joan spied a passerby in a poncho – a popular garment at the time – and said “ponchos!” Soon after, while caring for her young children as a single mom, Joan made the proverbial leap into entrepreneurship and never looked back...
