Happy New Year!!!

I’ve spent most of the last few months working on an update to Your Guide to the National Parks. While the book is still pretty good, things (mostly camping and backpacking info, and, of course, pricing) have changed uncommonly fast (and I made way too many sloppy mistakes). I have dozens of excuses, but they don’t matter. It’s my responsibility and expectation to do better. So, that’s what I’m doing. I have about 200 pages left to update, and 3.3 post-its worth of tasks after that.

Once it’s finished, printed and released, I’ll provide a pdf of the updated version to anyone who purchased the 3rd edition (moose cover). E-mail ([email protected]), call/text (414.828.6346), DM, or use snail mail (4927 Stone Road, Whitelaw, WI 54247) and share a picture of your copy or receipt or whatever, and I’ll get a better version to you when it’s time.

I recognize no information is better than wrong information, but I have no intention of watering down my work. There's value in all those details. And hopefully that pandemic was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Hope the New Year includes plenty of time in our wonderful public lands!

I was fortunate to be invited back to WOSU's All Sides to talk parks about a week ago! Love them and the work they do, keeping people informed about important issues affecting the people of Ohio, which includes national (like exploring our parks) and international topics. I also learned my Wisconsin accent got me into the bloopers reel for Ann Fisher's retirement :)

Here's the video. I know there are lots of non-profits vying for your discretionary income. NPR and WOSU are solid choices. Here's the interview. My brain's been a little fried after the last few years, but I'm working on getting it back.

There are over 50 national parks in the United States.

The Dayhiker's Guide is out today!

While the best feature is covering 280 of the best trails in all 63 national parks in one book, there are a lot of little details to love too. Like ...

✅ Trailhead parking spaces (while I enjoy seeing/meeting people on trails, not everyone shares that sentiment ... want a trail to yourself, pick one with very little parking space!! There are plenty of those.)

✅ Shaded relief maps - you can really see the area's topography

✅ Helpful notes about shuttles, permit requirements, visitation, pets, etc.

✅ Full park maps to keep you oriented while planning your hiking adventures.

✅ Rounded corners for easy packing!

Of all my work, I think I like this one best!

The first run of National Park Maps had covers that were highly susceptible to wear. I just didn't know that was a thing and wanted to keep the product at or under $20 list. Yesterday a new run completed with glossy laminated covers. Much nicer! They should be trickling into the supply chain in the near future.
