Relax to the sound of rain falling at River Johns! 🌧️

Started seeds at the end of February and they’ve been growing really well. 🌱 Definitely learned a lot from last year and more plants have actually made it to planting time this time around. 😅

I was ready to get everything in the ground after weeks in the 80s… but of course, now we’ve got another cold snap coming this weekend into early next week.

I’ve already planted a few things, so fingers crossed it doesn’t get too cold for too long. The rest will probably wait another week or so.

Spring in East Tennessee really keeps you guessing. 😂

Anyone else playing the “is it safe to plant yet?” game right now? 👇

The Iris are blooming! 🎉 I’m not sure what kind of Iris they are, but I am happy they’re finally blooming.

The color was needed since the daffodils faded a little over a month ago. There should be constant color from different plants from now until freeze.

I’ve loved Oxalis triangularis for a long time. 🍀💜
I’ve grown these purple shamrocks in Central KY, Middle & East TN, and even Florida. They’ve been great everywhere.

One of my favorite things about them is how they keep that deep purple foliage all season long. They don’t fade.

When it is cooler during the spring and fall, they’ll put out those small pink or white flowers. Every now and then you’ll even get blooms in summer if there are a few cooler nights.

They’ll die back to the ground after the first freeze, but always seem to come back strong. Some people even grow them as houseplants year-round.

Anyone else a fan of purple oxalis?

I can’t remember what kind of Iris these are, but I know they didn’t bloom at all last year. 🌿

I didn’t expect them to bloom this year either since most of the “regular” Iris are already in full bloom in people’s gardens and on the side of the road.

But I just noticed they’re putting up flower stalks and buds. 👀 Makes me think these are a different type of Iris altogether. Their leaves are much smaller and feel different from what I know Iris to have.

Always love when the garden throws you a surprise like this.

Anyone able to tell what kind they might be? 👇

While working on getting this year’s garden beds ready, there is a part of me that wishes I could fast forward to the end of summer to when the plants are at their peak growth and everything is blooming.

But I know that part of what makes the garden special each year is the journey getting it started and seeing it grow until it gets to that end of the summer point.

I’m looking forward to see how it will grow. I still plan on having the elephant ears, Castor Beans, and Mexica Sunflowers; but there are quite a few different plants than last year. It’s fun to change it up a little year to year.

Whether you’re planting crops, a vegetable garden, or a flower garden; here’s to a great year of growing!

Our Majesty Palm and Poinsettia are enjoying being back outside. I had them in mostly shade for 2-3 weeks and finally moved them to their partly shady spot where they’ll summer.

🌴 This is the Majesty Palm’s third summer outside and it seems to love it. Three years ago I put it outside cause it was dying. It was able to get better, but didn’t grow much. It did much better over the winter and then really grew last summer outside. This past winter it kept putting out fronds inside.

🎅 The Poinsettia is going on its 2nd year of ownership. It thrived last summer outside. When I brought it inside this fall, I tried to make it change color, but it was stubborn. In February and March it started to change and we can enjoy the color until they fade over the next few months.

The pop of red during late-winter and early-spring was welcomed during what can be a grey time of year in East Tennessee.

Can’t wait to see how they grow this summer. ☀️

The Tulip Poplar is a beautiful tree and the blooms look gorgeous as well. The blooms are harder to see since they start blooming after they’ve leafed out.
