"An extremely engaging, moving videotape, it speaks eloquently against war without ever uttering the cliches of the peace movement. As three veterans recount their experiences, they remind us boldly of the horror and foolishness of war … A simple credibility that is both challenging and disarming." —Appalachian Office of Justice and Peace, Catholic Diocese of Richmond

In Peace Stories, three men from the South recount their war experiences. William Farmer, a WWI veteran from North Carolina, describes the trench warfare and killing that took place after armistice. Connie Bowling was recruited by the Department of Defense during WWII to train cyclonium operators in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where they were secretly making the enriched uranium that went into the first atomic bomb. Bowling recalls the reaction at the plant when the news came that the bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima and his own feelings of having participated in mass destruction. Jack Wright, a Vietnam veteran from southwest Virginia, talks about his feelings of responsibility for the death of a prisoner of war and how difficult it has been for him to recover. Peace Stories puts the study of war into a human context as it graphically illustrates the impact of war on the ordinary people who carry out the decisions of presidents and generals.

Alan Lomax was a musician, an archivist, a filmmaker, and an activist who knew the power of art.

He traveled the world recording folk music, launching the careers Lead Belly, Muddy Waters & Robert Johnson, among others. He collaborated with Zora Neale Hurston & Sister Rosetta Thorpe, earning the nickname "Human Tape Recorder."

Rest easy Alan. Your work lives on.

"Being an organizer & journalist in the le***an, gay, feminist and women of color communities has been the focal point of my life. It has been a wild joyous ride."

Jeanne Cordova changed whose story gets told—and who gets to tell it. As an activist and writer, she changed the social fabric for all of us.

Happy birthday, Jeanne.

At WMMT-FM, Appalshop’s community radio station, we believe deeply in the power of local media to inform, connect, and uplift the people of Central Appalachia. For 40 years, we’ve been a voice for our region’s stories, music, news, and culture—serving as a platform for those too often left out of mainstream conversations. WMMT not only uplifts community voices, but it is also a critical outlet for people in our region to be informed about road outages, crisis alerts, boil water advisories, and emergency weather alerts.

That’s why we are deeply concerned about the potential impact of the proposed rescission bill, which would claw back already appropriated vital public funding from institutions like ours. These cuts threaten not only WMMT, but community radio stations, arts organizations, and public media outlets across the country—many of which provide essential services in rural and underserved areas.

We call on our listeners, neighbors, and elected officials to stand with us—to speak out in support of independent, community-rooted media and to reject legislation that would jeopardize the public good. WMMT remains committed to serving our region with integrity, creativity, and care. We’re not going anywhere. But we need your support now more than ever. Visit wmmt.org/donate today.
