We started our hike at 5:30am and made it up in just about an hour — right before the sun started to rise ☀️ and honestly… watching the sky change colors from up there? Worth every early alarm.
📍 Sandstone Peak Trailhead
12869 Yerba Buena Rd, Malibu, CA 90265
A few things to know before you go:
• The drive up Yerba Buena Rd is very winding with lots of elevation changes — if you get motion sick easily, take Dramamine ahead of time.
• This trail leads to the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains (3,111 ft), so expect steady incline and some rocky sections.
• It’s about 3 miles round trip from the main trailhead if you take the Mishe Mokwa loop route.
• Bring layers — it’s cold and windy before sunrise, even in summer.
• There’s limited parking, but there are restrooms at the trailhead.
• Wear good grip shoes — parts of the trail are sandy and uneven.
Hiking in the dark felt a little scary at first, but once that golden light hit the peaks and the ocean started glowing in the distance… I forgot all about it.
10/10 sunrise hike. Would you do it? 🌄
