Mari was a couple months shy of her third birthday when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. In fact, November 5th will mark two years since her diagnosis.
My bubbly, independent little girl became lethargic; she stopped speaking and always wanted to be held. Not to mention she needed to go p*e ALL the time! After a concerning phone call from my mom, I left work and took her to see her doctor. When we arrived Mari told me she had to p*e, again. Which made me ask for a cup for a urine sample, not knowing what they would test it for, but knowing something wasn’t right. Sure enough, the high ketones in the urine led to a blood sugar test, which revealed Mariana’s sugar was over 600. It was so high the meter could not give an exact reading! On that cool November evening, our Type 1 Diabetic journey began.
The cause of the highs and lows are difficult to pinpoint. Stress, hormones and physical activity are a few things that alter Mari’s blood sugar levels. The effects of these highs and lows are causing irreversible damage, and could be extremely dangerous, and even deadly.
This past year I was lucky enough to be Mariana’s teacher.
While we are home, my husband and I are constantly monitoring her sugar, but no one day is like another. Night time is especially nerve racking. Although, I always check her levels before I go to bed, there have been countless times I’ve had to rush for the apple juice, sit her up and pray she is capable of drinking a bit.
Just 9 days ago my worst fear became a reality. Mari’s sugar dropped dangerously low during the middle of the night, and I was unaware until I saw the meter read 52 in the morning. So many things ran through my mind. How could this happen? How much lower was she? How did I miss this? Needless to say, I felt helpless.
That was the moment I decided to look into a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) for Mariana. I knew they existed and that they cost a lot, but I've read so many beautiful stories of how DAD's transform children's lives. Knowing a DAD can make life with T1D a bit easier, while also keeping her safe is God sent.
