Dusty is softer than your favorite blanket and fully believes his life’s purpose is cuddles, toys, and being admired by strangers. He’s the kind of dog who will happily snuggle up one minute, then proudly parade his squeaky toy like it’s a trophy the next.

Fair warning: if you take him into a pet supply store, you will have a date by the time you get to aisle 4. Compliments will be given. Phones will come out. Dusty will pretend this happens all the time (because it does).

A new year is a time to look ahead, set goals, and make resolutions—things we want to grow, improve, or maybe just do differently than we have in the past. Nonprofits are no different.
As the Board of Base Camp Lindsey looks back on 2025, we have a lot to be proud of. We completed demolition on the building, helped 19 Veterans get off the street, fed 295 people throughout the year, and assisted seven more Veterans with furniture, household goods, and food. That’s a lot to accomplish in just one year.
We’ll also be honest—there are areas where we missed the mark. At times, we drifted away from our core mission. Our communication with the community wasn’t as consistent as it should have been, and we lost some supporters and volunteers along the way. In the coming year, our goal is to fix that. We’re asking for the chance to earn your trust again and invite you to be an active, valued part of our team.
You’ll see some changes in the new year, but in many ways, they’re not really changes at all. This is about resetting and getting back to the basics of who we are and why we exist. Base Camp Lindsey is here to serve struggling Veterans—those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Our mission is simple: to treat every Veteran with respect and compassion, in gratitude for their service to our country. Our vision is to eliminate Veteran homelessness in the North Texas communities we serve—all eleven of them, not just Wichita Falls.
At our core, we’re guided by the values this organization was built on: transparency, integrity, responsible use of resources, and respect for the worth and dignity of every person. These values guide every decision the Board makes.
You’ll also notice our logo changing—one last time. We want our look to truly reflect who we are, where we’ve been, and what we stand for, in a way that’s uniquely Base Camp Lindsey.
We’re also simplifying what we do so we can focus on what matters most. While we’ve appreciated being able to serve the broader homeless community and have made some great connections over the past year, monthly Stand Downs will be coming to an end. In 2026, our focus will be clear and unwavering: getting Veterans off the street.
In 2025, that often meant paying for hotel rooms until Veterans were able to secure VASH housing. In 2026, depending on funding, that might continue—or it might look like renting a home, purchasing a home, or finding another long-term housing solution. Whatever the approach, we’ll pursue the most effective and sustainable option available with the resources we have.
This doesn’t mean we’ve given up on our building. We plan to pull a construction permit in the next week or two and will continue working on it as funding allows. But when we’re faced with a choice—working on the building or helping a Veteran off the street—we’ll choose the Veteran every time. That’s not a change in direction; it’s staying true to our purpose.
Base Camp Lindsey has been fully operational for three years now, and we want our community to understand what that really means. We help with bus passes, birth certificates, and IDs. We assist Veterans in accessing benefits, medical care, substance abuse treatment, and counseling. We help them find safe housing, and once they’re housed, we help furnish their homes, stock their pantries, and set them up for success. And we don’t walk away—Veterans can continue to reach out to us whenever they need support. That’s the Base Camp Lindsey program. The building is just a place to call home.
As we move into the new year, our resolutions are simple: get back to basics, stay connected with our community, serve our Veterans, and grow our team. As we move into the new year, we’re inviting you to be part of the work. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the time. Whether you can give a few hours, share a skill, help behind the scenes, or simply show up when a Veteran needs support, there is a place for you at Base Camp Lindsey. Our mission is strongest when our community is involved, and together we can change lives—one Veteran at a time. We would be honored to have you on the team.
