Your university website has to reach multiple types of people.

You're trying to get attention from potential students; you're trying to help current students; you're trying to get donations from community members and other donors; and you're trying to engage with alumni. That is a lot of people to try to reach all at one time with one simple website.

So, how do we make this work for all these people? We ensure that our website follows best practices for user experience and web accessibility. These two pillars come together to help us create a website that is more inclusive and effective.

Let's explore how it works in this week's blog. Read it now at https://captcoder.com/web-accessibility-ux-drive-website-success/

Is your legal team worried about whether or not your website complies with Title II of the ADA?

You've got some time to work on your website's accessibility (April 2026), but lawsuits are still going ahead against organizations that aren't compliant.

How can you take proactive steps?

Let’s start with figuring out where you currently stand. Your website might be in better shape than you realize. Or you can have a mess you need to clean up (let’s lean hopeful).

With an accessibility audit, we'll lay out exactly what you need to do and where your liabilities are.

Is your university cutting students out of the recruitment process on accident?

If you’re ignoring the accessibility of your website, you are.

When your website is accessible, you can reach every student - up to 27% of whom may have a disability.

I've got good news for you. Improving your accessibility compliance can be easier if you have a WordPress website.

Check out the four ways WordPress makes accessibility easy:

🖼️: Ability to add ALT descriptions

👩‍💻: Ability to select the right HMTL tags

🖥️: Ability to use accessible (and SEO-friendly!) page URLs

📹: Ability to easily add YouTube or Vimeo videos with captions

Those of us who work in accessibility just want to provide equal access to the internet. This means regardless of background or disabilities.

I'm sure objectively you understand that not a single human is the same as another. And yet, our systems are set up for conformity that does not exist.

My accessibility work helps those with different abilities easily access the internet. That includes your blind and deaf friends, but also those who have hearing loss because of their jobs. It includes ensuring images and content are legible to people with color blindness. It means not creating designs that can trigger epilepsy symptoms. It means helping those with dyslexia or ADHD read your content.

Everything I do to improve web accessibility helps make a website easier for everyone else.

Do you know what's crazy to me? I've been working in accessibility since 2013, and I've only seen people start to care in the last couple of years. You know why? Because of DEIA initiatives.

DEIA has helped us get wins like ramps instead of stairs, medical studies that include women and people of color, and yes, improvements to the web.

Let's be good people and work together to provide fair access.

(Plus, you'll stop excluding up to 27% of your potential audience.)

Who else needed a break from social media this last fall?

Between the state of the world and some growth (yay!) in the business, I took a step back and prioritized the quiet.

I think I've been too quiet, though, and there are a lot of things I'd love to talk about, so look out world, unfiltered Marisa is entering the chat.

Tell me honestly - does social media burn you out? What are you doing to mitigate that feeling?

Imagine your website is a store. Would you lock the front door and turn away customers?

An inaccessible website does just that. It excludes around 29% of the US adult population with disabilities, costing you potential sales.

It’s not just about reaching all your potential customers; an inaccessible website can impact your finances, reputation, and operations.

Keep inaccessibility from draining your bottom line.

In this week’s blog, I’m breaking down the hidden costs.

Not having an accessible website can cost you big in legal settlements.

According to Usable Net's tracking of digital ADA lawsuits, 233 new suits were filed in July 2024 alone.

233 in one month.

Of those 233, 102 were against companies that have been sued for digital accessibility problems before. That means they didn't fix the issues the first time around.

Even more concerning, 62 of those suits were filed against companies using a third-party widget to "fix" their accessibility.

The harsh truth is that you can’t just download and pay a subscription to fix this problem. It has to be fixed correctly. Your website and digital assets must be built correctly to provide the best experience for everyone.

If you're ready to protect your business and provide your customers with a great experience, it's time to hire a partner.

Your university has always had to follow specific ADA guidelines, but new rules affecting your website were published on April 24, 2024. Are you ready?

This year, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) solidified the requirement for state and local government entities, including universities, to provide equal access to individuals with disabilities through their websites. While universities have two years from publication (April 24, 2026) to comply with these new rules, this isn’t something you can wait for.

Most university websites are large, and in my experience, many people are involved in keeping them current.

If you want to meet that April 2026 deadline, you have to start working now.

In this article, I'm breaking down some of the things you need to understand and the necessary steps to make your university website accessible.

It's the first week of another semester!

Since 2020, I've been teaching Digital Marketing at Wichita State and loving it. I love sharing the strategies that drive consumer decisions online and seeing my students put together some pretty impressive ideas.

Last year, we added a Web Strategies class that allows me to explore the art of creating amazing websites and doing it accessibleibly!

I love sharing everything I've seen change (and NOT change!) over the last 20 years I've worked in marketing. Sharing, teaching, and seeing students grow is a unique experience.

Here's to many more years of it!

Does the new ADA regulation apply to you?

The answer is yes if you're a public entity - local or state. And yes, that means you, my university friends.

We must provide an excellent experience for all our students, regardless of their abilities. This is hitting home as I start another semester teaching at Wichita State. I often have students with different needs, so I'm thankful Title II is implementing some new regulations.

The good news is that you have until April 24, 2026 to get compliant.

The bad news? It can take awhile to get there.

Here's what you need to know:

✅ All websites, digital course materials, mobile apps, and assets uploaded to those sites must be accessible.

✅ You largely need to provide alternatives for content, i.e. text alternatives to videos and images.

✅ Your website needs to be set up for anyone to use via a keyboard or assistive technologies.

✅ This is going to be an investment.

Stop worrying about accessibility and start taking action. You've got less than 2 years to get compliant, so it's time to start the conversation with your management and begin creating more accessible content NOW.

Want your marketing to make a significant impact?

It’s time to create a website that everyone can use. Yep, we’re talking about web accessibility.

It’s not just about following the rules and protecting ourselves legally; it’s about ensuring everyone feels welcome online. Because, frankly, the internet is for everyone.

I hear many organizations talk and talk about putting diversity and inclusion at the forefront of their marketing and company values, but they rarely remember that accessibility is also part of that.

The only way to be truly inclusive is to create an excellent experience for all your customers, including those with disabilities.

In my blog this week, we’re diving into where accessibility and DEI meet (and what happens when you ignore it).

Times are tough and attention is harder than ever to get.

Want to increase your brand's customer base by 27.8%?

It's time to address the elephant in the room.

Let's break this down with some stats.

First off, 28.7% of the adult US population has some type of disability. You're leaving a lot of customers and money behind when you don’t have a website or online experience that caters to them.

A recent study by Acquia found that 51% of disabled users would seek out alternative options if a website isn’t accessible, and 31% would complain to their family and friends about the issue.

That's a lot of people you're losing AND having them tell others not to use your business either.

It's not just about accessibility either. Web accessibility best practices line up with good user experience principles, and up to 69% of your website visitors click away from a poor user experience.

Not being accessible is causing you to lose out on customers. Whether or not you’re accessible affects everyone who visits your website.

Ready to learn the gaps in your harming your user experience? Let me audit that!

Our website audits help you identify your accessibility gaps and risks, giving you the power to address them.
