Flint Hills Media Project

Flint Hills Media Project Experience-based learning offered by the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University in partnership with Symphony in the Flint Hills.

Wichita State University students enroll in this experience-based-learning class through the Elliott School of Communication. The "Flint Hills Media Project" immerses students in various communication platforms as they record and write the stories of the people who live and work in the Flint Hills and document the annual Symphony in the Flint Hills concert. The class works to further the mission o

f the event, to "heighten appreciation and knowledge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie." Student work is shared with newspapers and TV stations across the state, and sometimes nationally. Each fall a WSU visual communication class combines the stories into a full-color magazine. (Available in late Novemeber.)

Here are some of Zachary Ruth’s favorite photos from the day. Zach is a sophomore journalism and media production student at Wichita State University and was part of the 11th Flint Hills Media Project.

Not long after the gates opened at Saturday's Symphony in the Flint Hills, we spotted this couple, obviously dressed for a wedding. What a sweet story by Owen Prothro on this Lawrence couple who made the event their wedding venue.

Mitch and Kasey Jones, of Lawrence, got married at the scenic Symphony in the Flint Hills on Saturday in the company of family and a few close friends. Eventually, nearly 8,000 people joined them for a reception party on the prairie.

After 20 years, Symphony in the Flint Hills staged the Grand Finale of their signature event Saturday, June 14, 2025 at the Evans Family Ranch near Stong City, Kansas. While storms clouded much of the state that morning, the symphony site remained dry. Other than having to start the Kansas City Symphony concert about 30 minutes late because guests were slow getting up the gravel road and into the site, the sold-out event went smoothly as planned. Here are a few photos from the concert and sunset after. We'll continue to post galleries here throughout the week.
