In 1909, Topeka was drenched with 8.08 inches of rain in 24 hours, the greatest 24 hour total on record for the Kansas Capital. In 1911, from the evening of September 6th, through the morning of the 7th, Wichita was deluged by around 8 inches of rain, 7.99 inches to be exact. This had been the greatest 24 hour rainfall on record for the Air Capital until September 12th, 2008, when 10.31 inches inundated Mid Continent Airport. The heavy rain caused horrific flooding throughout Western Sedgwick County. && In 1970, lightning struck a group of football players at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Two were killed and 22 were injured. All 38 players and 4 coaches were knocked off their feet.
