Before he was locking down NFL receivers, Elbert Mack was making plays at Wichita North High School, where he led the city in interceptions during his senior season and established himself as one of the area’s premier defensive backs. His journey continued at Butler Community College, where he was a key member of back to back Jayhawk Conference Championship teams and helped the Grizzlies earn a trip to the 2004 NJCAA National Championship Game. After Butler, Mack earned a scholarship to Troy University and quickly became one of the most feared defensive backs in college football. During his senior season in 2007, he led the nation with 8 interceptions, earned First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors, and finished his Troy career with 10 interceptions, ranking among the conference’s all-time leaders.

Despite going undrafted in 2008, Mack refused to let that define his story. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and carved out a seven year NFL career that included stops with the New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans. Over 81 NFL games, he recorded 117 tackles, 6 interceptions, 17 pass breakups and 2 defensive touchdowns, including a memorable 73 yard pick-six with the Saints. From Wichita North to Butler cc, from Troy to the NFL, Elbert Mack’s career is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the power of believing in your opportunity when others overlook you. Wichita has produced some outstanding football talent and Elbert Mack remains one of the city’s finest success stories.
