⚖️ COURTROOM 101: WHAT IS A CONTINUANCE?

A case we’ve been following recently appeared in court recently. A continuance was requested and granted, and the next court date is currently set for October 6.

So… what exactly does that mean?

A continuance is simply a postponement of a court proceeding to a later date.

It does NOT mean:

❌ The case was dismissed.
❌ The defendant was found innocent.
❌ The defendant was found guilty.
❌ The judge “threw out” the case.
❌ Someone automatically did something wrong by asking for more time.

There can be many reasons a continuance is requested. Depending on the circumstances, an attorney may need additional time to review evidence, investigate the case, prepare for a hearing, address scheduling issues, or handle other matters that need to be resolved before moving forward.

And sometimes the court agrees that more time is appropriate. Sometimes it doesn’t.

In this particular case, the continuance was granted, meaning the matter will be addressed at a later date rather than proceeding today.

📅 Next scheduled date: October 6

And here’s the part that matters:

We don’t have to fill in the blanks.

A court date being postponed doesn’t tell us what will ultimately happen in the case. That’s what the court process is for.

So if you’re seeing people online saying, “That means ___,” or “They’re doing ___ because ___,” take a breath. 😂

Unless it’s actually in the court record, it’s speculation.

We’ll stick with what we can verify.
Records over rumors.
Facts over Facebook.
Receipts over assumptions. 📄⚖️

There’s something about small towns that hits different.

Before everything was online.
Before you could Google an answer in three seconds.
Before everybody carried a camera in their pocket. 😂

We had people.

You knew who lived down the street. You knew which store had the best deals, which restaurant had the best food, which teacher everybody remembered, and who could tell you exactly what happened in town before the newspaper even knew about it. 😉

So today, we’re taking a little trip down memory lane.

🏛️ PUBLIC RECORD WEDNESDAY: WHO ACTUALLY DOES WHAT?

Since today is a court date for a case we’ve been following, we’re going to do something around here that seems to be becoming a lost art:

WAIT.

We’ll wait until the paperwork is available before we talk about what happened.

No guessing.
No filling in blanks.
No “well, somebody said…”

We’ll look at the records. 📄

But that got me thinking…

How much do we REALLY know about the people we elect—and what their jobs actually are?

In a small town, different elected officials have very different responsibilities. And sometimes the easiest way to figure out who is responsible for something is simply to understand what each position actually does.

So, let’s start with a few of the big ones:

👤 THE MAYOR

The mayor is the city’s chief executive officer and has specific responsibilities under state law and the city’s governing documents.

But being mayor does not mean having unlimited authority to make every decision in town.

That’s an important distinction.

🏛️ CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

The City Council is the legislative body of the city.

Council members deal with things such as ordinances, policies, budgets, expenditures, city business, and other matters that come before the governing body.

And remember—the council is made up of elected officials, too.

👮 CHIEF OF POLICE / CITY MARSHAL

And here’s one people may not realize:

In Wilburton, the Chief of Police/City Marshal is an ELECTED position.

Yep. Elected.

The City of Wilburton identifies the Chief of Police/City Marshal as the city’s elected law enforcement officer. The Chief oversees the Police Department and serves as the general keeper of the peace for the city. (Wilburton)

So when we’re talking about police operations, that’s not automatically a “call the mayor” or “blame the council” situation.

Know who actually has authority over what.

💰 CITY CLERK / TREASURER & OTHER CITY OFFICIALS

These positions handle a whole lot of the administrative, financial, record-keeping and day-to-day business of city government.

And here’s where things get REALLY interesting…

PUBLIC RECORDS.

Because records can tell residents what happened, who did what, what was approved, what was spent, what was discussed—and sometimes what wasn’t done.

And THAT brings us back to the point:

Knowing who is responsible for what makes it a whole lot easier to hold the RIGHT person accountable.

If something falls under the Council’s authority, ask the Council.

If it’s within the Mayor’s responsibilities, ask the Mayor.

If it concerns police operations, understand the authority of the elected Chief of Police.

And if you want to know what actually happened?

Look at the records.

Because “I heard…” is not a public record. 😂

Over the next few Wednesdays, we may break down some of these positions, what they can—and cannot—do, and where residents can find the information for themselves.

Because you don’t have to be a lawyer, politician, or government nerd to understand your own local government.

You just have to be willing to look.

And knowledge is a pretty damn good way to stir the pot. 🥄🔥

☀️ MONDAY MORNING, LATIMER COUNTY!

A new week is starting, so here’s a little Monday food for thought…

We spend a lot of time talking about the problems in our communities.

But sometimes the most interesting conversations happen when we stop asking who is to blame and start asking:

“What would it take to actually fix it?”

Not a Facebook argument.
Not pointing fingers.
Not “that’s just the way it’s always been.”

What would an actual solution look like?

Because complaining about a problem is easy.

Finding a solution that can actually work?
That’s where things get interesting. 👀

So this week, let’s talk about the how, not just the what.

There is something I’ve been thinking about, and I’m going to say this without naming a person, a situation, or taking sides in anyone’s particular circumstances.

It has become blatantly apparent to me that there are a LOT of people who have never been put in a position where they would have to make an absolutely gut-wrenching choice to protect their child.

And honestly? I’m glad.

I wouldn’t wish that kind of situation on anybody.

But here’s where I think people need to pump the brakes before judging someone else:

Just because you have never been in that position does not mean you know what you would do if you were.

Sometimes protecting your child doesn’t look the way people on the outside think it should look.

Sometimes it means swallowing your pride. Sometimes it means walking away. Sometimes it means making a decision that other people will never understand because they don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle. And sometimes it means accepting consequences yourself because the alternative could put your child through something far worse.

I know what it feels like to be pushed to a point where you are looking at decisions you never in a million years thought you would have to consider.

I know what it feels like to fight, and fight, and fight until you are exhausted, while someone else is telling a story about your family that you know isn’t the truth.

And I also know what it feels like to have people on the outside look at one little piece of a situation and think they understand the whole damn thing.

They don’t.

So before we decide that someone doesn’t love their child, didn’t protect their child, or somehow failed their child because they made a decision we don’t understand…

Maybe remember that you are judging a situation you have never had to survive.

And I sincerely hope you never do.

Because being grateful that you have never been forced into that position is one thing.

Using that privilege to judge someone who has been there is something entirely different.

Sometimes you don’t know the whole story.

Sometimes you don’t even know half of it.

And sometimes the person you’re judging was simply doing what they believed they had to do to protect their child.

You don’t have to agree with someone’s choices.

But maybe stop pretending you’d know exactly what you’d do until you’ve actually been standing in their shoes.

🌙 Goodnight, Latimer County! 🌙

What a night! The pie supper was a GREAT turnout, and I have a feeling I may have bought just a little too much. 😂 My piggy bank is filing a formal complaint.

I also spotted a few of our political candidates out and about tonight, and honestly, I was very pleased to see that. 👀 That’s what community is about—showing up, getting involved, and being where the people are.

But I have to say… my favorite part may have been the third auctioneer. 😂😂 Some of the comments made while he was rattling that bucket?! Y’all… 🤣🤣 THAT was great entertainment!

And yes, before anybody asks… I missed the pecan pie cheesecake bars. 😭 Apparently I was too busy doing whatever the hell I was doing when they made their appearance.

BUT… I have since been offered some privately. 👀😂 So perhaps all is not lost.

All in all, it was a wonderful night, and it was good seeing so many people come out and support a great cause.

Now I’m calling it a night.
