Having an autistic child can be confusing, especially if you're not autistic yourself, so it makes sense that parents would have a lot of questions. More and more I'm seeing parents coming to autistic communities and autistic run organizations for answers instead of places like Autism Speaks, and it fells me with hope.
[Image description: A four panel comic of a parent of an autistic child trying to choose who to turn to for answers. The comic is titled "The Right Choice" and is made by Theresa Scovil.
Panel 1:
A worried parent says "My child was just diagnosed as autistic. I have so many questions. Who can I turn to?"
Panel 2: Honeydew comes in from the right and says "Your child go diagnosed? Congrats! If you need help you can ask autistic adults. We were kids once and can help you understand your child better."
The parent smiles.
Panel 3:
A representative of a bad autism organization comes in from the left says "Your child got diagnosed? I'm so sorry. This is a tragedy. Through harmful therapies and pseudoscience we can fix your child, and make them normal."
The parent looks sad.
Panel 4:
Honeydew says to the parent "Please! For the sake of your child, don't go with them!"]
