🌸 Induction Methods Series: Cytotec (Misoprostol) 🌸
Cytotec, also known by its generic name Misoprostol, is a medication sometimes used to help start or speed up labor. It works by softening (ripening) the cervix and triggering contractions.
✨ What it is:
Cytotec is a pill originally designed for stomach ulcers, but it is also used in obstetrics. It can be given by mouth or inserted vaginally to encourage the cervix to open and contractions to begin.
✨ Why it’s used:
• To ripen the cervix if it’s not yet ready for labor
• To help start contractions for induction
• Sometimes used in cases of miscarriage management or postpartum bleeding
✨ What to expect:
• Cramping and contractions may begin within a few hours
• Contractions can sometimes come on strong and fast, depending on dosage
• Continuous monitoring is often recommended once contractions begin
✨ Things to remember:
• Cytotec is used “off-label” in the U.S., meaning it’s not FDA-approved specifically for induction, though it’s widely used in maternity care
• Because contractions may become intense quickly, dosage and timing are important to discuss with your provider
• You always have the right to ask about alternatives, risks, and benefits
