There is something special about a group of people who use their gifts not only to entertain, but to bring comfort, joy, and fellowship to others.

On this episode of Life in Wilkes, we welcome Laura Donovan and Tom Furr from Seniors on Stage, one of Wilkes County’s longtime community music organizations.

For decades, Seniors on Stage has shared songs and smiles at nursing homes, retirement communities, public concerts, senior centers, and community events. Their motto says it beautifully: “Seniors singing for seniors.”

Laura and Tom take us back to the group’s early days, remembering the vision of Bob Johnson, the energy of Joe Brewer, the old productions and skits, barbershop singing, favorite performances, and the many Wilkes County residents who have helped keep this organization going.

This is a wonderful story about service, music, friendship, local heritage, and the people who make Wilkes County such a special place to call home.

North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro are taking meaningful steps toward a more connected riverfront future.

The Wilkes EDC recently introduced the River District Development Company and its long-term vision for the Boros River District, creating new opportunities for places to live, work, gather, dine, stay, and enjoy the River corridor.

In North Wilkesboro, that vision includes important sites such as Block 46 and the historic North Wilkesboro Rail Depot, with the potential for new residential, restaurant, hospitality, recreation, and public gathering spaces. Just as important, it is about strengthening the connection between our downtowns, our river, and the people who call Wilkes home.

There is a great deal of work ahead. We are encouraged to see local leaders planning thoughtfully for a future that can support economic growth, housing, tourism, and a stronger sense of community for generations to come.

The 2026 Wilkes County Fourth of July Parade brought the community together for a memorable America 250 celebration.

Coordinated by the North Wilkesboro Rotary Club and led by Club President Fred Costello, this inaugural parade featured local organizations, families, first responders, businesses, and patriotic community spirit even as temperatures soared above 100 degrees.

Beginning September 1st, 2026, the Wilkes Heritage Museum will implement new operating hours.
Sunday - CLOSED
Monday - CLOSED
Tuesday - CLOSED
Wednesday - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Thursday - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Friday - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Saturday - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

We will also close for any major holidays and in the event of any inclement weather.
