⌨️ NEWS ATTACK! A survey finds that 80% of us think we’re good spellers. [But if you’ve ever been on Facebook, you know the reality is more like 10 percent.]

🚽 WACKY BUT TRUE: BURGLAR STUCK IN BATHROOM VENT RESCUED... A burglar was stopped when he got stuck climbing through a vent while trying to break into an apartment in China. Firefighters worked about an hour to free the man from the narrow vent leading to a bathroom.

🏊‍♀️ DOES SWIMMING COUNT AS A BATH OR SHOWER? Social media is seemingly torn on this question: Does swimming in a pool count as taking a bath or shower? Turns out, people are split. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did a study a few years ago which found that around half of Americans admitted to using swimming as an alternative to bathing. Apparently, some people assume that the chlorine in the pool works the same as soap. The other half are really grossed out that this is even a debate.

📷 MAN PHOTOGRAPHS CHEETOS THAT LOOK LIKE THINGS... Have you ever looked up and noticed that a particular cloud looks like a face, a dog, a ship, or some other object? It’s a psychological phenomenon known as pareidolia, where the human brain takes randomness and tries to turn it into something significant and known. One unusual Instagram account uses pareidolia all the time with Cheetos. The owner of finds Cheetos that look like various things. When he spots one, he photographs it and then uploads it to Instagram with a caption of what he’s seeing.

WACKY BUT TRUE: MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF WITH NAIL GUN... A man in Russia survived after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a nail gun. He was nailing down floorboards in his bathroom when he tripped and fell and fired a two-inch steel tack into his chest, barely missing his heart.

WE’RE NOT VERY HAPPY, SO GO TO A PARK... Researches at the University of Vermont studied 50 million tweets a day, scoring the “happiness” of people’s words to monitor the national mood. One consistency from the study: being outdoors — and specifically parks — make us happier. Researchers looked at anonymous Twitter data for the study and tweets from parks and after park visits were more positive. The powerful effects of nature are strongest in large parks with more trees, but smaller neighborhood parks also provide a significant boost. Their impact on happiness is real, measurable, and lasting. Tweets show that parks increase happiness to a level similar to the bounce at Christmas, which typically is the happiest day of the year.

🚗 WHO FINDS THAT THEIR CAR IS THE BEST PLACE THEY CAN RELAX? My wife and I were having dinner with a group of friends over the weekend, and one of the guys asked how many of us look forward to arriving early to an appointment or to work so that we could have some relaxation and decompression time in our cars. We talked about how wild it is that our cars have become a nice island of solitude, and how we’ve all seen people in shady parking spots eating a snack, napping, or reading a book in their cars. 📀 FLASHBACK: DVDs WILL BE OBSOLETE IN 11 YEARS... It was eleven years ago this week that Microsoft founder Bill Gates said DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years… at the latest. The billionaire said, “If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it’s ridiculous. These things can scratch or simply get lost.” DVDs are sorta obsolete, right? Who still watches DVDs regularly? Do you have your own collection? 🍺 WACKY BUT TRUE: MANHOLE TRUCK OVERTURNS... It’s quite common — and sometimes a bit humorous — to hear about a semi-truck overturning and spilling its contents on a road. The thought of thousands of bottles of beer, gallons of mustard, or crates of donuts lying out on a busy road is so odd that it makes us laugh. In China, a semi overturned and spilled its load of manhole covers. And like people do when beer or money spills from a truck, a number of people loaded up the manhole covers and took off with them.

👶 NEWS ATTACK! A study found that having children will result in you living longer. [Or maybe it will just seem that way.]

⌨️ DON’T BE USING TOO MANY PRODIGIOUS WORDS... Everyone knows someone who tries to make themselves sound more intelligent by using big words they barely understand. However, a study shows that readers can see through this. A psychologist at Princeton took a handful of writing samples and used a thesaurus to replace the simple words with needlessly flowery ones. Then he gave all the writing samples — the original, simple ones and the modified, flowery ones — to 71 students to evaluate. The result? As the grandiosity and complexity of the language increased, the judges’ estimation of the intelligence of the authors decreased.

🍦 WACKY BUT TRUE: ICE CREAM WAS TOO COLD _ A woman in Romania made an official complaint to the government consumer protection authority because her ice cream was too cold. Officials there said they’d consider her complaint, but there wasn’t much they could do about it.

OVERHEARING PHONE CONVERSATIONS MORE DISTRACTING... Scientists (at Cornell University) definitively proved that overhearing a cellphone conversation is more distracting than overhearing a normal conversation. It’s because you only hear a “half-a-logue,” which is less predictable and therefore requires more mental power to analyze and ignore.

THE NUMBER IS 297... That’s the record for consecutive games started by an NFL player, which is held by Brett Favre. Punter Jeff Feagles played in 352 consecutive games, which is the longest of all-time for a special teams player. Special teams players are not credited with starts in the NFL.

WACKY BUT TRUE: 92-YEAR-OLD DEAD WOMAN WAKES UP... A 92-year-old woman in Germany was pronounced dead at a retirement home because the doctor did not detect any breathing or pulse. She was then transported to a mortuary for funeral preparations. Later that same evening, a funeral home employee heard screaming. The employee was stunned to discover that the 92-year-old was actually alive.
