Morning thoughts, perspectives.. what have you. I’m just curious. How can we bridge the gap between generations to better teach them Virginia history. Are we really doing our part as being the new old heads?

I attended a powerful event at the Virginia Black Film Festival, a screening of the documentary Displaced from the Birthplace of America. It was more than a screening. It felt like a community meeting, a space where truth, memory, and lived experience were shared about the Black community of Williamsburg.

Afterward, a friend said she didn’t realize there were many Black people in Williamsburg. I had to tell her, respectfully, that we have always had a rich and vibrant community here. What is often promoted is not the full story.

During the Q and A, we talked about representation and access. Let me say this clearly. Instead of our ideas and intellectual property being taken without credit, give us a real seat at the table. Provide equitable funding. Stop displacing families from land that has been part of their bloodlines for generations. Stop erasing the truth. Williamsburg is diverse, layered, and alive with history.

As someone who has curated community programs with the William and Mary libraries and worked to tell Virginia’s cultural stories through Art Riche, I feel a responsibility to help amplify this film. I will use my outlets and my network to make sure these voices are heard.

Because if Williamsburg is called the birthplace of America, then the full story of its people must be told in real time.

After the screening at the Virginia Black Film Festival at the historic Kimball Theatre, I asked the Emmy-nominated Woodard family behind 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 what they learned from filming the documentary and what they learned as a family.

✨Here’s what they shared.
