Can someone skip purgatory entirely and go straight to heaven? Fr. Francois Bandet of the Heralds of the Gospel answers this question on Ask A Priest Live.

His starting point is sobering: only saints make it to heaven, and however good we may be, most of us agree, we're far from sainthood. Purgatory exists precisely for this reason. It's a place of cleansing, a consequence of our failings and our sins, and Fr. Bandet notes its roots go back to the Old Testament and have always been part of Catholic teaching.

So is it possible to skip it? Yes — he says it's "very, very possible." He suggests to have the Holy Name of Jesus constantly on one's lips and in one's heart, and to genuinely aspire to holiness and sanctity.

Above all, he says, you have to desire heaven; because those who don't love or desire heaven simply won't make it there. The most basic requirements, in his words, are that "you have to believe in heaven and then you have to want to go to heaven."

Fr. Bandet ties this back to the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd, who goes after the lost sheep because he wants everyone in the fold — but who also respects our human freedom, including our freedom to disobey Him.

That tension, he says, is the challenge of the Christian life. His closing counsel: growth in holiness comes down to growing in love, since love is what we'll discover fully in heaven. The more we love, the more we conform to God's law, spirit, and counsel & the less likely we are to pass through purgatory at all.

There is so much sympathy for Lindsay Clancy and almost none for the children she killed — and that imbalance is horrifying.

Sarah Cain, cohost of Rise Right confronts the public reaction to the Lindsay Clancy mistrial head-on. The relief here isn't that she avoided conviction — it's specifically that she wasn't acquitted. But the deeper outrage is what came out about the jury itself: reports indicated that of the twelve jurors, eleven wanted to find her not culpable, and only one held out to hold her responsible for what she did. That is being described exactly as it should be: horrific.

Facts matter, and they're being erased in a public conversation increasingly shaped by TikTok videos that cherry-pick pieces of the story while ignoring vast swaths of the evidence that imply she was lucid enough to carry this greusome act out.

The erasure of the children who died from this conversation isn't a neutral oversight. It's a moral failure of public discourse, and it needs to be named as one.

Bishop Strickland says he told his brother bishops to their faces: "I'm not going to be the manager bishop. I'm going to teach the faith." That was ten years ago, and that's when the trouble started.
Joe asks him why the bishops have set aside teaching the faith at all, and the answer is a two-and-a-half-minute indictment of management over mission.

Bishop Joseph Strickland, bishop emeritus of Tyler, Texas, recalls a closed session at one of the last bishops' meetings he attended: "Brothers, I know there's a Strickland problem. I'm sorry if I've caused unease for you, but I've got to do what I've got to do. I've got to teach the truth." He contrasts the apostles, who "had nothing to manage" and were all in on teaching what God revealed, with a cardinal's line that the bishops' job is "just to manage staying connected to Rome." His answer: we stay connected to God through teaching who He is, Jesus Christ, truth incarnate, and when the offices in Rome go off the rails, a bishop who only manages how things look has decided the truth doesn't matter anymore.
