Sam Neill, Jurassic Park actor, dies aged 78

'Hero, legend, sweetheart': Tributes to Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill, who has died aged 78Neill, who was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in New Zealand, died "surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life", a statement said. In March 2023, Sir Sam revealed he had been undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

He later said the disease was in remission but he would require monthly chemotherapy for the rest of his life. In April 2026, Neill said a scan showed no cancer in his body, and his family's statement on Monday said he "remained cancer free" at the time of his death.

The statement thanked hospital staff and added: "More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss. "British actor Richard E Grant wrote, external that he knew his fellow actor for three decades, saying Neill had "guided and helped me through a very difficult time in my life", and describing him as "an officer and a gentleman in the truest sense".

Sudan's paramilitary RSF chief Hemedti sentenced to death over war crimes

A Sudanese court has sentenced the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to death for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide over atrocities committed in the West Darfur region. The court in Port Sudan, a city under the army's rule, convicted Dagalo - known as Hemedti - in absentia, along with 15 other senior RSF members, who were given the same sentence.

The Sudan Founding Alliance, which includes the RSF, told the BBC it was "sham trial" that "does not even deserve a comment". The trial centred on alleged atrocities committed in the regional capital el-Geneina, including the June 2023 killing of the state governor, Khamis Abbakar.

The court also found the 16 defendants guilty of orchestrating attacks on civilians, widespread destruction and looting of property, and the targeting of schools, places of worship and residential neighbourhoods. Among those sentenced were Hemedti's brother and deputy, Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, another brother, Al-Qoni Hamdan Dagalo, and the RSF's West Darfur commander, Abdul Rahman Juma Barkallah.

Sam Neill, known for 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Piano,' dies at 78, his family says

Actor Sam Neill has died, his family said in a statement on Monday. He was 78.

The statement said he had died in the eastern Australian city of Sydney. The New Zealand actor rose to international prominence for his performance as Dr.

Alan Grant in the 1993 film Jurassic Park. "The loss ‌was sudden and ‌unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free," a statement posted on Neill's Instagram page said, referring to his diagnosis with blood cancer announced in 2023.

Neill's high-profile career Neill's acting career was launched in the 1970s, with his role in Gillian Armstrong's 1979 film My Brilliant Career already making his name known internationally. He played a multitude of other TV and film roles, including the British historical crime drama Peaky Blinders, the US spy thriller The Hunt for Red October and Jane Campion's The Piano, which won the highest award in Cannes in 1993.

But it was his role in Jurassic Park as the paleontologist Grant, where he played alongside Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough, that cemented his international standing. In March 2023, his memoir, "Did I Ever Tell You This?

Ebola is spreading faster in eastern Congo than it can be tracked, as deaths pass 700

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo “continues to outpace the response efforts,” the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief has saidByGEIR MOULSON Associated Press and MONIKA PRONCZUK Associated PressJuly 14, 2026, 9:12 AMThe Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo “continues to outpace the response efforts,” the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief said on Tuesday after returning from a trip to Bunia, in Ituri province, which is one of the worst hit areas.“Perhaps the most alarming finding is that many of the newly reported deaths are people who died in their communities without ever reaching a health facility and without receiving care,” Chikwe Ihekweazu said. “And as of today, 80% of new cases are outside our contact lists and so are coming to us from unknown chains of transmission.”Congo has been battling the outbreak of a rare type of Ebola since May with no approved treatment or vaccine.

The Africa Centre for Disease Control said last week that it is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on the continent. As of Monday, at least 1,926 people have been infected and 702 died in three provinces in Congo from the rare Bundibugyo virus, Congolese authorities said.

South Africa says more than 53,000 foreigners deported in migration campaign3 hours agoRichard KagoeGlobal Affairs Reporter, NairobiEMMANUEL CROSET / AFP via Getty ImagesProtests have been held across South Africa as thousands demand that all undocumented migrants leave the countryThe South African government says more than 53,000 foreign nationals have been deported or repatriated since launching a "migration management" campaign five weeks ago. Most were from Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, officials say, and the number is likely to rise as repatriations and deportations continue.

South Africa is carrying out one of its biggest crackdowns on undocumented migrants in years, following weeks of anti-immigration protests that have seen violence, intimidation and looting. Protesters have been demanding tighter border controls and mass deportations, accusing migrants of contributing to high unemployment, rising crime rates and collapse of public services.

Mexico urges US to investigate ICE migrant deaths | AP News

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico formally requested that U. S.

state attorneys general criminally investigate cases of migrants who have died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody or during raids, the Mexican government said Tuesday. The request follows the death of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Houston.

Since the beginning of U. S.

President Donald Trump’s second term, 17 Mexican migrants have died during immigration enforcement, 14 in ICE custody and three in agency operations. Mexico’s Foreign Ministry had previously said it would make the request, which was formalized on Tuesday, according to the ministry.

It said a similar request will be also sent to the U. S.

Department of Justice. The United States is not legally obliged to act on the requests.

Also, the Mexican government said it has started sending letters to U. S.

Planes sent to tackle wildfires of 'exceptional scale' near Paris

2 hours agoChris GrahamReutersA wildfire burns in Noisy-sur-Ecole near Fontainebleau, southern ParisTwo firefighting planes have been rushed to the Paris region to tackle a large wildfire south of the French capital. The Fontainebleau forest blaze, described by officials as "virulent" and of "exceptional scale", partially closed the country's main north-south highway, disrupting traffic during the first major weekend getaway of the summer.

Early on Monday, officials said the fire had raced across 800 hectares and was still spreading in the forest, about 40 miles (60km) south-east of the city of Paris. The Paris region is suffering through its third heatwave this year during a summer in which temperature records have broken in several countries across Europe.

It was the first time firefighting planes had been sent up from the normally drier and hotter south of the country to tackle fires in the Paris region, Eric Brocardi, of France's national federation of firefighters, said. Two firefighting helicopters and an observation aircraft had also been deployed, he added, according to Agence-France-Presse.
