Welcome to Bo 🐺 We’re excited to have this handsome 1.5yr old German Shepherd here for a 4 week board & train!

Our focus with Bo is improving his reactivity and building a solid foundation of obedience. He struggles with lunging at cars and reacting to small animals, so we’ll be working on those challenges while incorporating remote collar training to help build clear communication, reliability, and better decision making in real world situations. We’re looking forward to seeing his progress over the next 4 weeks!

Mack goes home today!

We were able to get in quite a bit of real world training in some new environment as well as really work on his disengagement command to help address that resource guarding.

His go-home session was a success, and I’m looking forward to hopefully hearing some great updates from back home!

Welcome post for Bentley!

This young pup is the newest member of BAM & Dannii Marie Margera's pack. Bentley was found in Texas left outside & tied up in the dirt to fend for himself. Thankfully, he was found & taken into safety. He ended up at a rescue where Bam & Dannii found him & decided to bring him into their home.

It quickly became obvious Bentley needed some help adjusting to life as a normal pet. From a training perspective, he is a clean slate. Even ā€œsitā€ has been unusually difficult for him to learn, mostly because he was so awkward when taking food from my hand.

What he does know how to do is jump with persistence & intensely bark when left alone. Given his previous situation, both are understandable. The good news is this guy has an awesome attitude and is eager to learn.

So we’re starting at square one. Once we built a food lure, we started shaping new behaviors. One of my favorite ways to build a relationship with a dog is through confidence building, so we’ve already been doing a ton of that during his first few days. It’s already making a noticeable difference. He’s settling in, becoming more comfortable, & we’re seeing improvements in the separation anxiety & demand barking.

I have to admit, this whole thing feels quite surreal & nostalgic for me. I grew up watching CKY videos with my friends, all gathered around a little TV. There are too many skate videos to mention, but Audio One Step Beyond was always one of my favorites that I’ve watched more times than I can count. Of course, let’s not forget Viva La Bam and Jackass, and I spent my fair share of time trying to recreate probably a few too many stunts. Without getting into too much detail, I was no stranger to a shopping cart, a loading dock, or a set of stairs with a nice bush waiting to break your fall.

But seriously, being able to meet Bam, pick up Bentley at Castle Bam, & now play my part in helping shape this dude to be the best version of himself is a pretty special experience for me.

We have a lot to work on in just a couple of weeks, but I’m already seeing improvement after only a few days. I’m excited to help set him up for a successful new life with his family!

Mack started his field trips today! This real world training is especially helpful to build on his impulse control and get some exposure around new people to help his obedience. These skills also play a part when addressing the resource gaurding that he’s been showing. So far so good as we move into week three!

Welcome back, Mack!

We’ve been working with Mack through private lessons since he was a puppy, and he’s also stayed with us for a few short stay and train days. Mack already has a pretty good introduction in obedience, so this three week stay will allow us to take that foundation further. We’ll be introducing and teaching him e-collar training while also addressing some resource guarding that he has been practicing at home.

With his obedience foundation already in place, we can focus on adding more clarity and structure around these areas and helping him develop better habits and decision making moving forward. We’re happy to have him back and have high expectations for what Mack is going to accomplish over the next three weeks!

Pluto is going home today!

After discovering that Pluto was nervous around bikes, scooters, and most personal motorized vehicles, I took him down to the Riverfront to work through some of those distractions. He did great, and while we were there, we happened to come across this little music event in the park. Pluto was completely comfortable rolling around in the grass with people gathered all around him. He’s done great with his public outings and has made some seriously good progress while he’s been here.

If you know someone who may be interested in adopting him, please have them DM me.

I’m intentionally not sharing Pluto’s full backstory because he doesn’t need someone to hear his story and feel talked into adopting him out of emotion. I believe this is a big part of why we see such a high return rate in the adoption world. We need to be level headed when going into an adoption and focus on what the individual dog actually needs, not just how badly we want to save them.

The right home for Pluto will be one that provides patience, structure, consistency, and strong leadership. His adopter will need to be willing to put in the work and continue giving him the guidance he needs to be successful. I will be providing free training to his adopter, and I strongly encourage them to take advantage of it. I want to make sure they understand how to work with Pluto and have the tools they need to continue his progress at home.

He’s an awesome guy, and I really hope we can find him the home he deserves!

I always stop to help a turtle across the road, but this case was a little different.

We get quite a few turtles traveling through our yard every year, but this particular girl had been hanging around the same area for the better part of a week. It was almost like she wanted to be noticed. šŸ˜‚ When I finally saw her extend her head, I realized why. She had what looked like two large abscesses on either side of her head, which was essentially a double ear infection, or aural abscesses. These aural abscesses aren’t just a cosmetic issue. They can be extremely painful, make it difficult or even impossible for a turtle to eat, and if left untreated can lead to serious complications and even be fatal.

We were able to find a local wildlife rehab that could take her in, and shortly after arriving, she had surgery to clear up the infections. They kept her for a couple of weeks to recover, and eventually we got the call that she was ready to come home. So today, we got to release her right back where we found her! We’re just happy we were able to get her the help she needed and give her a chance to recover and return home. Hopefully, she’s back to living her best turtle life!

And of course, huge thanks to the wildlife rehabbers who took care of this girl and do this kind of work every day. I’m just happy we could play a small part in getting her healed up and taken care of.
