From the time we are all children, we learn to compare ourselves to others. It’s kind of our way of making sense of things and figuring out the world.
In a way it can be a good thing. If you have strong self-esteem that is.
Unfortunately most of us end up on the detrimental side of the comparison game. We find ourselves comparing our lives and start thinking what we have is NOT as good as others, or we are not as capable, or not as likely to succeed. I know it’s so hard, but we have to stop! When comparison comes to that point it turns into envy.
Envy is an emotion. A very real emotion that eats up many of us. It is so unhealthy! It prevents us from moving forward, and it fixates us on what others have, instead of what we want to work for. It’s really hard to be able to let go of envy. But, it is life changing when we can turn the emotion around into something positive that motivates us and inspires us.
For those of us who have fallen into this black hole of envy, it’s impossible to keep those blinders on 24/7. We have to be able to find ways to turn around the emotion! Find ways to fill our cup of self worth. If we don’t envy is gonna suck our cups dry!
For me it starts with my faith. Stepping back and seeing my worth through the eyes of a man who thought I was enough to die for. Right there, that should be enough. I should be able to say, “all better.” But when our human side keeps comparing, these are reminders I have to feed myself:
1. Someone else’s victory doesn’t make me a failure. We have to stop seeing someone else’s success as a measurement to our journey!
2. Run to my circle! Your circle should want you to win. They should clap the loudest when you have good news. They are there for each other when things are good or bad.
3. Go back to my why! You have to know why you are pursuing whatever you are pursuing! What are your goals? What makes this all worth it? This “why” is what drives you to keep moving forward. If you want what someone else has, don’t sit there jealous because they got their first, WHO CARES! In this race everyone wins when they cross the finish line regardless of how fast they get there!
