At the farthest northern reaches of the Adirondacks, Titus Mountain dishes up soft turns, chill vibes, and even maple syrup.

Titus Mountain keeps it real in the Northern Adirondacks. Our season began late. My husband, Kyle, and I are not long-term planners, but we start checking snow reports each fall and usually take an almost-obligatory trip to Whiteface sometime in December. Alas, as all know too well, this winter, lik...

With its gnarly terrain and relaxed, retro vibe, Magic Mountain is the perfect place for one weekend warrior to find balance:

With its gnarly terrain and relaxed, retro vibe, Magic Mountain is the perfect place for one weekend warrior to find balance. As the Red Chair climbed toward the summit, I peered at the steep minefield of fluffy moguls, rocks, grass and stumps passing beneath me on the liftline. I was at Magic Mount...

Author J.D. Kleinke fled the Northeast to chase powder and steep lines out west, and he wound up finding adventure, love, and, ultimately, himself. Read our interview with the writer of "Dudeville."

An Interview With Author J.D. Kleinke, Who Chased Powder West and Found Himself For all but the most die-hard East Coast skier, there’s no denying the pull of big western mountains. With deeper, more consistent snow, more vert, and higher elevations, the peaks that push up west of the Continental ...

The siren song of fresh snow and open slopes pulled Ice Coast Magazine west...to Elk Mountain in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Elk puts the Endless Mountains on the map. Sitting by my window over the recent Christmas holiday weekend, I stared wistfully at the melting snow outside my house in the lower Hudson Valley. Like the dying embers of a fire, the once robust piles slowly receded, soaking the sad brown grass underneath...

Gore Mountain isn’t your typical resort. It’s a natural, old school ski area that perfectly embodies the spirit of winter in New York’s Adirondacks.

This sprawling, wild, and too-often overlooked mountain embodies the spirit of Adirondack skiing. I was standing in the parking lot with a belly full of fancied-up instant ramen, basking in the radiant warmth of both the noodles and the distant winter sun when it really hit me: at long last, winter....

“Solo days might just turn out to be some of the best days of skiing you’ll ever have.”

An ode to those underappreciated days of mountain solitude. February 7, 2020. The Beforetimes. My alarm rips me from sleep a little after 3 a.m., and I stumble out of bed and into the bathroom. Cold water on my face is a rude shock but works instantly – at least physically. Mentally, I’m still d...

We’re firm believers that tailgating is not only a responsible option this season for public health reasons, but it also adds to the experience of day on the slopes. We’re kicking off our tailgate recipe series with a tried and true favorite—spicy chipotle chili. Enjoy!

Part 1 of an occasional series. After a seemingly endless wait thanks to our last pandemic-abbreviated season, then a torturously long Indian summer across the Northeast, skiers and riders rejoiced in their first turns of the season last week. But with widespread vaccination and the associated promi...

“Skiing cures a lot, but it can’t do much about the ‘Rona – except adapt. So that’s what skiers, riders, and ski areas have to do in order to cope during a year like no other.”

Planning and hoping during the chaos of Covid. There’s never been a ski season like this one. The lifts have spun through wars, recessions, industry consolidation, and times of civil and cultural upheaval. The world outside our mountain idylls is often turbulent, but for as long as there has been ...

We've been getting our mountain fix in the Catskills and the Adirondacks during this, our summer of national discontent. Campfires and swimming holes fill the space left by carved turns and powder dreams. Where are you getting back in touch with the mountains?

On a rainy January day in New Jersey, we found bottomless packed powder and a promising training ground for new skiers and riders at America’s first indoor ski slope:

Indoor skiing has arrived in North America, bringing with it new skiers and riders and the promise of year-round turns. The air was cool and damp and smelled like a hockey rink. It was a mild January day in New Jersey, and the gray sky and persistent drizzle of the mid-winter thaw made it feel much....

Sugarbush starts a new chapter under parent company Alterra, but the new owners assure regulars that not much about the beloved Vermont resort will change. We visited, hiked to Castlerock, and hung out with their PR team to talk about what makes it a great mountain and what's in store for the future.

The latest resort to be swept up in the consolidation race resolves to keep its identity. It’s five minutes into our hike to Castlerock, and I’m sweating balls.
