You may know Patton Oswalt as the voice of Remy the rat in the Oscar-winning Pixar film “Ratatouille.” You may also know him as Spence in the long-running TV sitcom “The King of Queens” or in his roles in movies such as “Young Adult,” “Zoolander,” and “Magnolia.”

On October 17, Delaware audiences will know him as a stand-up comedian when he brings his “Effervescent” tour to The Playhouse on Rodney Square, mining a blend of pop culture and social issues into laughs.

At first glance, Frank and Tara Coates look like your typical retirees. They split their time between the Delaware beaches and Florida; stay active by playing golf, swimming, hiking, and doing yoga and other physical activities; and spend time with their two grown children.

However, for one of them, the need to stay active, eat healthy, and participate in social activities is more important than ever. At age 58, Tara was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease—and the role of caregiver was added to Frank’s retirement agenda.

For people who party, October has long been regarded as beer month, and many imbibers even make the pilgrimage to Munich, Germany, where the first Oktoberfest occurred in 1810.

No one style of brew is celebrated, but with the coming of winter, we sought out a hearty one. We stopped by the bar at Chuck Lager to sip a glass of Heavy Lifter.
