ROSEBORO, NORTH CAROLINA: THE NUMBERS DESERVE ATTENTION.

According to the latest 2024 American Community Survey 5 year estimates, approximately 39.2% of Roseboro residents are living below the poverty line.

That is roughly 440 people in a town of only about 1,123 residents.

For comparison:

Roseboro: 39.2%

Sampson County: 21.8%

North Carolina: 13.0%

United States: 12.5%

Roseboro’s estimated median household income is just $39,333, compared with $52,432 across Sampson County and $72,388 statewide.

These are estimates, and because Roseboro is a small town the Census margin of error is substantial. But even with that important qualification, the economic distress reflected in the data deserves serious attention.

Nearly 4 out of every 10 residents estimated to be living in poverty should not be brushed aside.

Both are from Roseboro, North Carolina.

And that makes this moment mean a little more.

Roseboro is a town with good people, deep history and real pride, but it is also a community facing serious economic hardship and poverty. That reality is difficult to see, especially for people who came from there.

But where you start does not have to determine where you finish.

On September 14, Monty and Earl come together at DLPC in Wilmington as we count down to the national premiere of GRACE THE TABLE.

NORTH CAROLINA IS WATCHING ITS FILM JOBS WALK AWAY

North Carolina loves to talk about supporting film.

Here is the reality.

In 2025, film and television production generated $185.5 MILLION in direct spending across North Carolina and created more than 7,000 crew, talent and background job opportunities.

Yet the North Carolina Department of Commerce warned that changes to the Film and Entertainment Grant funding structure could mean the state cannot award significant grants to new productions until 2029.

Think about that.

An industry responsible for thousands of North Carolina jobs is competing against Georgia, Canada, Europe and practically every other place smart enough to understand that productions bring MONEY with them.

Not just actors.

Carpenters. Electricians. Drivers. Caterers. Hotels. Restaurants. Rental houses. Construction crews. Hair and makeup artists. Wardrobe. Security. Locations. Small businesses.

And Wilmington has already felt the pain. Production spending in the Wilmington area was estimated at roughly $30 million in 2025 compared with about $200 million the year before.

Meanwhile, skilled North Carolina film workers are being forced to look elsewhere for work.

Yes, lawmakers recently appropriated another $15 million for the Film and Entertainment Grant Fund for 2026 and 2027.

But this needs to be fixed permanently.

North Carolina cannot spend decades building one of America's great film workforces and then stand around while thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of production dollars pack their bags.
