On November 7, the house lights will dim in Asbury’s Greathouse Theatre and a hush will fall over the crowd as actors and actresses take the stage. “The Tempest” is coming to Asbury — not by way of the Literature and Culture class, but on stage. Opening night is just a week away.

“I can’t separate faith from creativity,” Asbury screenwriting professor Gaffney remarked in his interview. “We all have this talent that comes from God. Back when I was in graduate school I had this professor. I went to Columbia University, which was a secular school, and Howard Stein, my mentor at the time, found out I was a Christian and called me into his office. He said, ‘Sean, what you need to understand is that art and faith do the same thing. They ask the same questions. It’s your job as an artist who has faith, you owe it to the art community to combine your faith and your art.’ So from that point on, I’ve made it my job to integrate the two, and now I can’t separate them.”
In the spirit of the Halloween season, this semester’s Faith & Film will be “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” and will take place on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Next Wednesday, the doors to the Screening Room of the Miller Media Communications building will open and students will have the opportunity to watch and discuss the film.

Aldersgate Green has been the long-time host of the Aldersgate Cookout, an event hosted by the Aldersgate community to bring people to their side of campus for a night of fun and food. This year, however, the cookout was replaced by something a little more medieval.

On March 4th, the Asbury Honors Program hosted an event highlighting Dr. Felicia Wu Song and her most recent book, “Restless Devices.” She will also be speaking in chapel tomorrow morning, March 6th. We had the pleasure of interviewing her prior to the @asburyhonors event.

“I grew up loving fairytales. I don’t think I’ve ever stopped. But what really got this vision pounded into my head was when I took Printmaking last year,” Wall said. “When I was making all my prints, I was doing a little bit of illustration on the side and they all had this continuous theme of being fairytalesque. And then someone put the idea into my brain, they said ‘those are kind of like fractured fairytales.’ And so from there, I became hyper fixated and started working on my exhibit.”

“I don’t think there’s ever been a situation in which saying ‘I know how to ballroom dance’ has been a negative thing.”

“This year, admissions are dealing with a post-outpouring Asbury, which has affected admissions and their applications in some small ways. Sigrist and Johnson said that the 2023 class was less affected in numbers by the Outpouring because, by February, many students already had an idea where they would attend school.
‘For 2023 Fall students, I personally think the outpouring had a very solidifying effect in the minds of the students who are here who were already admitted to Asbury or applied,’ Sigrist said.
However, the impact could be seen with the class of 2024.”

“Imagine swimming as fast as you possibly can through chlorine-filled water and focusing on a black line at the bottom of the pool, coming up for a gasp of air every other second. The noise of the crowd intensifies as you get closer and closer to the wall. You can barely see your opponent out of your peripheral vision. Finally reaching out and hitting the cement, the race is over. Coming up from the water and trying to catch your breath, only to find out you have just broken a school record. This was the experience of Ian Wang, 21.”
