Go ahead. Select terminal traits first — carcass, growth, performance, terminal indexes. Stack the sheet, chase the grid, capture that premium!
It works. Right up until it doesn’t.
Here’s what’s happening right now: so many cattle are grading Prime that the premium is collapsing under its own weight. The Prime-Choice cutout spread has been averaging about $13/cwt over the last six weeks — down from nearly $22 a year ago. The Prime-Select spread got cut from $35.66 to $15.86. And this past spring there was 20.5% more Prime beef on the market than the year before. When everybody’s cattle grade, the premium stops being a premium. Now the packers are trimming the grid, and the money a whole industry bred toward is getting quietly clawed back.
So when the premium was the plan, and the premium walks — what’s left standing in your pasture?
A terminal cowherd. Big-framed, hard-fleshing, late-maturing females built for the rail instead of the range. Great steers. Cows that break down.
Maternal selection doesn’t crash like that. Fertility, udder quality, moderate mature size, longevity, the ability to breed back on grass — none of it gets gridded away. A cow that weans a calf every year for twelve years pays you whether the premium is $250 or $25.
Capture the premium when it’s there — just don’t bet the cowherd on it. Build the female that still works when the grid doesn’t, and let the carcass be the bonus, not the foundation.
Build good cattle, and it’s clear blue sky — endless opportunity.
