Halloween traditions are alive in well in small towns across America. Although the holiday feels commercialized and far from the Halloweens of our youth, I can assure you that there are still small towns out there who are choosing to stick to tradition and community. Churches opting for “trunk or treats” instead of the traditional door-to-door, and kids hitting up multiple Halloween events in neighbor towns are not ruining Halloween for these kids. There are those small towns out there like Wi******er, Ohio, where when the clock strikes 6 pm, the streets are alive with kids and parents who are all dressed up and ready to go. They dawn dinosaur costumes and wagons fashioned with princess lights, and they go say “trick-or-treat” and offer a smile to all of their friends and neighbors. Not strangers, but neighbors they know. People they go to church with, work with at the plant, and see at the gas station every morning. Police officers they know well, waving and handing out candy. From the 94-year-old neighbor who hands out a pack of bubble gum each year, to the neighbor that always blasts the spooky tunes and decorations, these people are what make trick-or-treat in a small town so special and heartwarming. If you haven’t experienced a small-town Halloween, I highly recommend you do. Small towns like Wi******er, Ohio are what is securing the tradition of Halloween in our country.
