Due to reduced distribution system pressure the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the

BEAUMONT TRAFFIC UPDATE

All east and westbound lanes of Interstate 10 will close for the weekend on May 2 as the Maury Meyers Bridge in Beaumont is demolished.

This weekend's closure is the second and most significant of three weekend road closures to facilitate the removal of the old bridge.

From Friday, May 2 at 8 p.m. through Monday morning, May 5 at 5 a.m. all lanes I-10 in both directions will completely close at Laurel Ave. for the bridge demolition. Drivers should expect heavy delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes during this closure.

Police will be on site to help manage traffic flow at intersections. The closure could end early if work is completed early and is subject to change due to inclement weather, according to the Texas Department of Public Transportation.

Detours
Eastbound I-10
Eastbound 1-10 traffic will exit at Calder Ave (Exit 852B), continue on the frontage road and reenter I-10 after 11th St. Drivers continuing to northbound U.S. 69 will U-turn at 11th St. and enter at the next entrance ramp.
Westbound I-10
Westbound I-10 traffic will exit at Calder Ave (Exit 852B), continue on the frontage road and reenter I-10 after Laurel Ave. Southbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-10 traffic will exit at Delaware St/Calder Ave, continue on the frontage road to westbound I-10 and enter I-10 after Laurel Ave.
Southbound U.S. 69
Southbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-10 traffic will exit at Delaware St/Calder Ave, continue on the frontage road to westbound I-10 and enter I-10 after Laurel Ave.

The bridge closed permanently on April 11, 2025, as crews began work to replace the bridge with a new at-ground level roadway that will run beneath the future I-10 main lanes, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Due to the bridge closure, westbound Liberty Ave traffic is now detoured to northbound 11th St., then westbound Calder Ave., and finally to westbound Phelan Blvd. Eastbound Phelan Blvd. traffic is detoured to eastbound Calder Ave., southbound 11th St., and then continue east on Laurel St., TxDOT says.

A final weekend closure will affect the I-10 westbound frontage road at Laurel Ave. from May 9-12. During this period, westbound frontage road traffic will detour to Calder Ave. westbound to Phelan, then to N 23rd St.

Updates will be shared on TxDOT Beaumont's social media. Business access will remain open throughout the construction period, though all closures are subject to change due to inclement weather.

It could be as late as 2029 before the new at-ground level roadway will be finished to connect Liberty and Laurel back to the west side of the interstate.

The closure is part of the ongoing I-10/69 Interchange Project, which aims to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and upgrade emergency evacuation routes, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT says the bridge is being removed to address a long-standing height issue for freight traffic. The project will also include drainage upgrades to meet current design standards.
